Santa Teresa del Tuy lies in the state of Miranda in north-central Venezuela, about fifty kilometres south of Caracas in the fertile lowlands known as the Valles del Tuy. The town sits beside the Tuy River in a warm basin enclosed by the green ridges of the coastal mountain range, which separates the valley from the capital and from the Caribbean beyond. The climate is hot and humid compared with the cool air of Caracas, and mango, banana and flowering trees grow easily along the streets.

Around two hundred and fifty thousand people live in the town and the municipality it heads, and the population has grown very rapidly in recent decades. Large numbers of families moved here from the crowded hillsides of the capital in search of affordable housing, and Santa Teresa now functions largely as a dormitory town, with thousands of residents travelling daily to work in Caracas. Locally, agriculture remains significant, with sugar cane, citrus, maize, cassava and cattle, alongside commerce, food processing, construction and public services.

The valley was inhabited by indigenous communities before Spanish colonists established estates here in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, growing cane and cacao with enslaved African labour. The settlement developed around a church dedicated to Saint Teresa and was formally founded in the middle of the eighteenth century. During the wars of independence the Tuy valleys were repeatedly crossed by armies moving between the coast and the interior. The building of the railway and later of highways towards Caracas transformed the area in the twentieth century, and from the 1970s onwards the town expanded into a major residential centre.

Visitors will find a traditional Venezuelan town centre with a shaded plaza, a colonial-style parish church, a market full of tropical fruit and small streets of low, brightly painted houses. The countryside around offers river bathing spots, cane fields and viewpoints over the valley, while the mountains between the Tuy and the capital contain hiking routes and cloud forest. Excursions from here reach Caracas, the Caribbean coast at Higuerote and the beaches and mangrove lagoons of Barlovento.

The strongest cultural feature of the region is its Afro-Venezuelan heritage. Drumming traditions inherited from the enslaved population of the old cacao and sugar estates survive vigorously, and the feast of Saint John the Baptist in June fills the towns of the Tuy with all-night drumming, singing and dancing. The May Cross celebrations, patron saint festivals, joropo music and dishes such as hallacas, sancocho and cachapas are part of everyday life.

A suburban railway line built in recent decades connects the Tuy valleys with Caracas, greatly easing the commute, and highways and frequent bus services complete the links. Schools, technical institutes and branches of national universities serve the growing young population.

Santa Teresa del Tuy is important as a fast-growing residential and agricultural centre and as a stronghold of Afro-Venezuelan musical tradition close to the capital.
