Santol lies in the province of La Union in the Ilocos Region of northern Luzon, tucked into the foothills of the Cordillera Central. Unlike most towns in this coastal province, Santol is entirely landlocked, occupying a mountainous interior of steep ridges, forested slopes and narrow valleys drained by the Amburayan River, which forms part of the boundary with Ilocos Sur. The climate has a marked dry season from November to April and a wet season dominated by the southwest monsoon and by typhoons that sweep in from the Pacific.

The municipality is home to a modest population spread across a dozen or so barangays, and it functions as a rural service centre rather than a large urban settlement. Agriculture supports almost everyone, with rice grown on terraces and river flats, along with corn, tobacco, root crops, bananas, mangoes and coffee, while livestock and small scale trade supplement family incomes. Remittances from relatives working elsewhere in the Philippines and abroad play an important role in the local economy, as they do throughout the Ilocos region.

The area was settled by Ilocano farmers moving inland from the coastal plain, and the town was established during the Spanish colonial period, taking its name from the santol, a round tropical fruit with fragrant white flesh that grows abundantly in the district. Communities from the highlands, including Kankanaey and other Cordillera peoples, also live in the upland barangays, giving the municipality a blend of lowland and mountain culture that is characteristic of this transitional zone.

Life here is quiet and closely tied to the land. Houses cluster along the ridges and river terraces, roosters and carabao are part of the daily soundscape, and the town plaza with its church and municipal hall forms the centre of civic life. The annual town fiesta brings home relatives from far away for processions, beauty pageants, basketball tournaments and long communal meals. Ilocano traditions remain strong, including the making of basi, a fermented sugarcane wine, weaving on wooden looms and a cuisine built around pinakbet, bagnet and dishes seasoned with fermented fish sauce.

For visitors the appeal is scenery and tranquillity. Mountain roads offer sweeping views over terraced fields and forested valleys, rivers and streams provide swimming holes and small waterfalls, and the surrounding province holds well known attractions within easy reach. San Fernando, the provincial capital, has beaches, a Chinese pagoda and colonial churches, the surf town of San Juan draws visitors from around the world, and the mountain city of Baguio lies a few hours away.

Roads connecting Santol to the coastal highway have improved in recent years, though journeys can still be slow during heavy rain, and jeepneys, vans and tricycles provide public transport. Elementary and secondary schools serve the barangays, with colleges and universities located in the larger towns of the province.
