São José dos Campos
São José dos Campos is a major city located in the Paraíba Valley region of São Paulo State, Brazil, situated between the two largest cities in South America — São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. With a population of approximately 730,000, it is one of Brazil's most important centers of technology, aerospace, and defense industries. The city sits at an altitude of around 600 meters above sea level in a pleasant subtropical climate and is often regarded as one of Brazil's most dynamic and livable mid-sized cities.
The city's origins date to the 17th century, when Jesuit missionaries established a settlement in the Paraíba Valley. It grew steadily as an agricultural community before transforming dramatically in the 20th century. In the 1950s and 1960s, the establishment of major research and industrial institutions fundamentally changed the city's character. The creation of the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) and the Aeronautics Technological Institute (ITA), together with the founding of Embraer — Brazil's globally renowned aircraft manufacturer — turned São José dos Campos into a world-class aerospace hub.
Embraer, headquartered in the city, is the world's third-largest commercial aircraft manufacturer and one of Brazil's most internationally recognized companies. Its presence, along with dozens of aerospace and defense suppliers and research institutes clustered in the city's technology park, has given São José dos Campos the informal title of the "Brazilian Silicon Valley" or "Brazilian aerospace capital." The Technological Park (ParqTec) and the São José dos Campos Technology Park are major centers of innovation and entrepreneurship.
The city has a well-organized urban infrastructure, with broad avenues, green spaces, and cultural facilities. The Municipal Market, the Bosque dos Eucaliptos park, and the Orquidário (orchid garden) are popular recreational destinations. The Museu de Arte e Cultura de São José dos Campos showcases the city's cultural ambitions, and a lively restaurant and nightlife scene reflects its affluent professional population.
São José dos Campos is exceptionally well connected, sitting on the Presidente Dutra Highway (BR-116), the busiest road in South America, and is linked to São Paulo by frequent bus and car services. The city also has an airport with regular flights to major Brazilian cities. ITA is considered one of Brazil's most prestigious technical universities, attracting top students from across the country.
São José dos Campos exemplifies Brazil's capacity for high-technology industrial development, combining a strong research base, world-class manufacturing, and a well-educated workforce in a city that offers a high quality of life compared to the congestion of São Paulo. It stands as a model of science-driven urban development in Latin America.
