Sapele lies in Delta State in southern Nigeria, on the banks of the Benin River near the point where it is joined by the Ethiope, deep within the network of creeks and mangrove channels that make up the Niger Delta. Although it stands well inland, the river here is wide and deep enough for ocean going ships, which has shaped the town's fortunes for more than a century. The climate is hot, humid and heavily forested, with a long rainy season and a short dry spell influenced by the dusty harmattan wind.

The town has a population of well over one hundred and fifty thousand and serves as an important commercial centre for the surrounding region. It lies in the traditional homeland of the Okpe people, a subgroup of the Urhobo, and the Orodje of Okpe remains the traditional ruler, though generations of trade have brought together Itsekiri, Isoko, Ijaw, Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa communities into a notably cosmopolitan population.

Sapele grew from a small riverside settlement into a major port after British traders established a station here at the end of the nineteenth century. Its great transformation came with timber. In the 1930s a large sawmill and plywood factory was built on the river, drawing on the vast hardwood forests of the interior, and it became one of the biggest wood processing operations in West Africa, employing thousands and exporting logs, veneer and plywood around the world. The reddish brown hardwood known internationally as sapele mahogany, used for furniture, boats and musical instruments, takes its name directly from the town. A planned company township of quarters, clubs and schools grew alongside the mill and still influences the layout of the modern city.

Timber declined as forests were exhausted, but oil and gas from the surrounding delta brought new activity. A large power station on the outskirts feeds electricity into the national grid, and rubber plantations, palm oil processing and river trade continue to support the local economy. The port still handles cargo, and boat traffic on the creeks remains an everyday sight.

Sapele has a reputation across Nigeria for hospitality and nightlife, with lively bars, highlife and afrobeats music, and a food culture built around fresh fish, banga soup made from palm fruit, starch, pepper soup and roasted plantain. Local festivals of the Okpe people, church celebrations and the colourful markets that fill the riverside streets give the town its rhythm. Riverside viewpoints, boat trips through the mangroves and the historic sawmill area are the main points of interest for visitors.

Roads connect Sapele to Warri, Benin City and Asaba, and the town is reached from Delta State's airports and the wider highway network. Polytechnics, colleges of education and nearby universities serve students from the surrounding communities.

Sapele is remembered as the town that gave its name to one of Africa's most valued timbers and remains a busy river port with a distinctive and welcoming character.
