Saransk
Saransk stands on the banks of the Insar River in the forest-steppe of European Russia, about six hundred and thirty kilometres east of Moscow. It is the capital of the Republic of Mordovia, one of the country's national republics, and the landscape around it is a gentle mixture of birch woods, ploughed fields and low hills. The city centre was largely rebuilt in the twentieth century, so wide boulevards and open squares dominate rather than narrow historic lanes.
Around three hundred thousand people live here. Saransk matters above all as the political and cultural heart of the Mordvin people, whose two main groups, the Erzya and the Moksha, speak Finno-Ugric languages related to Finnish and Estonian. The city is also an industrial centre known across Russia for lighting equipment, cables and electrical machinery.
The settlement began in 1641 as a wooden fortress on the Atemar defensive line, a chain of strongholds built to protect the southern frontier of the Tsardom from nomadic raids. It later became a quiet provincial town of merchants and craftsmen, touched briefly by the rebellion of Stepan Razin and later by Emelyan Pugachev, who was welcomed here in 1774. Industrial growth arrived in the Soviet period, when factories were evacuated eastward during the Second World War, and Saransk became the capital of the Mordovian autonomous republic.
The most striking building is the Cathedral of Saint Theodore Ushakov, completed in 2006, a tall white church with dark blue domes that dominates the main square and is named after the admiral who was canonised and is buried in the region. Around it stretch Soviet Square, the Millennium Fountain Square and long pedestrian promenades. On the edge of the city rises the Mordovia Arena, built for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, when Saransk hosted four matches and welcomed visitors from around the world.
Cultural life is unusually rich for a city of this size. The Erzia Museum of Visual Arts holds the expressive wooden and cement sculptures of Stepan Erzia, a Mordvin artist who spent decades in Argentina, and it is considered one of the finest regional art collections in Russia. The Museum of Mordovian National Culture explains local costume, embroidery and ritual, while national theatres perform in Erzya and Moksha as well as Russian. Traditional choirs and folk festivals keep the languages audible in public life.
Trains link Saransk to Moscow, Kazan and Samara, and a modern airport terminal was built for the World Cup. Trolleybuses, which have run since 1966, remain the backbone of city transport. The Ogaryov Mordovia State University is the largest institution of higher learning, joined by a pedagogical university and several colleges, and the city has produced a remarkable number of Olympic race-walking champions.
Saransk is a tidy, green and welcoming capital that offers a rare window onto Finno-Ugric culture inside Russia, and its World Cup investment left it more open to travellers than ever before.
