Schaffhausen

Schaffhausen is the capital of the canton of Schaffhausen, located in the northernmost part of Switzerland on the northern bank of the Rhine River. With a population of approximately 36,000 inhabitants, it is the only Swiss cantonal capital situated predominantly on the north side of the Rhine, and the entire canton is almost completely surrounded by German territory, creating an unusual geographical situation. Schaffhausen is internationally famous as the location of the Rhine Falls (Rheinfall), the largest waterfall in Europe by volume of water, and for its remarkably well-preserved medieval old town featuring an extraordinary collection of oriel windows.

The Rhine Falls are a natural spectacle of overwhelming power and beauty, located approximately four kilometers west of the city center at the village of Neuhausen am Rheinfall. The falls plunge approximately 23 meters over a wide rocky ledge approximately 150 meters across, with two prominent rocks rising from the center of the cascade. At their peak flow in early summer, the falls carry over 1,100 cubic meters of water per second, creating a thunderous roar and a permanent mist that drifts across the surrounding area. Boat trips to the rocks in the center of the falls, approaching to within meters of the cascade, are among the most exhilarating tourist experiences in Switzerland. The surrounding park provides multiple viewing platforms, a castle tower, and restaurants overlooking the spectacle.

The historic old town of Schaffhausen is one of the most beautiful and best-preserved in Switzerland. The city's most distinctive architectural feature is its remarkable collection of over 170 oriel windows (Erker), projecting bay windows typically occupying one or more floors of a building's facade, often elaborately decorated with carved stone or painted plasterwork. The density and quality of these oriel windows, which appear throughout the old town on buildings dating from the Renaissance to the Baroque period, is unparalleled in Switzerland and creates a streetscape of extraordinary richness and variety. The Haus zum Ritter and the Zum Goldenen Ochsen are among the most celebrated examples.

The Munot fortress, a circular Renaissance fortification built between 1564 and 1589 on a vineyard hill overlooking the old town, is the most recognizable historic monument of Schaffhausen. The massive cylindrical tower, surrounded by a deep moat, can be visited for free, and its rooftop terrace offers excellent panoramic views over the city, the Rhine, and the surrounding countryside. By tradition, the Munot bell ringer rings the bell at nine in the evening every night, a custom maintained continuously since the 16th century.

Schaffhausen is home to IWC Schaffhausen (International Watch Company), one of Switzerland's most prestigious luxury watch manufacturers, founded in the city in 1868 and still operating its main manufacture here. The IWC Museum, adjacent to the manufacture, documents the company's history and displays exceptional examples of its watchmaking craft.

Schaffhausen's combination of the spectacular Rhine Falls, its extraordinary oriel window heritage, the Munot fortress, and its position as a well-functioning and pleasant Swiss city make it a destination of considerable appeal, offering natural grandeur and historic urban beauty within easy reach of Zurich.
