Seattle

Seattle is the largest city in the state of Washington and the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, with a population of approximately 750,000 in the city proper and over 4 million in the greater metropolitan area. Located on a narrow isthmus between Puget Sound and Lake Washington, with the Cascade and Olympic mountain ranges framing the horizon, Seattle is one of America's most scenically situated cities. It serves as the economic and cultural capital of the Pacific Northwest.

The area was originally home to the Duwamish and Suquamish peoples before European-American settlement began in the 1850s. The city was named after Chief Seattle of the Duwamish tribe. Seattle grew rapidly during the late 19th century, fueled by the timber industry and the 1897 Klondike Gold Rush, which established it as a major outfitting and supply port. The 20th century brought further growth through the establishment of the Boeing Company, which long dominated the city's economy.

Today Seattle is globally recognized as a technology powerhouse. Amazon, which was founded in the city in 1994, maintains its headquarters here, and Microsoft is based in neighboring Redmond. The tech boom of the late 20th and early 21st centuries transformed Seattle into one of America's most prosperous and innovative cities. The city is also home to Starbucks, the globally recognized coffeehouse chain that originated here in 1971.

The Space Needle, built for the 1962 World's Fair, remains Seattle's most iconic landmark, offering panoramic views of the city, Puget Sound, and Mount Rainier from its observation deck. Pike Place Market, one of the oldest continuously operating public farmers' markets in the United States, is a beloved institution filled with fresh produce, seafood, flowers, and artisan goods. The Seattle Art Museum, the Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP), and the Seattle Symphony round out the city's cultural offerings.

Seattle has a vibrant music heritage, having given birth to grunge rock in the late 1980s and early 1990s through bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. The city continues to support a thriving live music scene across multiple genres. Seattle's many neighborhoods — from Capitol Hill and Fremont to Ballard and the Central District — each have distinct personalities, dining scenes, and community cultures.

The city is served by Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and has an expanding public transit network including light rail, buses, and ferries. The University of Washington, one of the country's top research universities, anchors the city's academic excellence. Seattle's combination of natural beauty, technological innovation, culinary creativity, and progressive culture makes it one of the most dynamic and desirable cities in North America.
