Sendai

Sendai is the largest city in the Tohoku region of northern Honshu, Japan, and the capital of Miyagi Prefecture. Located approximately 350 kilometers north of Tokyo, the city has a population of approximately 1.1 million people, making it one of Japan's major regional centers. Sendai is known for its university culture, distinctive cuisine, vibrant festivals, and its significant role as the economic and cultural engine of the Tohoku region. The city's abundance of street trees and forested hills have earned it the affectionate nickname the City of Trees.

Sendai was established as a castle town in 1600 by the feudal lord Date Masamune, one of the most celebrated military commanders and administrators in Japanese history. Date Masamune, known as the One-Eyed Dragon due to losing sight in one eye in childhood, developed Sendai into a prosperous and culturally rich domain. The ruins of Aoba Castle, perched on a hill overlooking the modern city, and the Zuihoden mausoleum — a magnificent example of ornate Momoyama-style architecture built as Date Masamune's mausoleum — are the city's most important historical landmarks and testify to this founding lord's extraordinary legacy.

Sendai hosts several major festivals that draw visitors from across Japan. The Tanabata Matsuri, held each August, is one of the three great festivals of Tohoku and fills the city's shopping arcades with millions of elaborately crafted bamboo and paper decorations that sway in the summer breeze. The Sendai Pageant of Starlight, a winter light festival that illuminates the zelkova-lined Jozenji Street in December, has become one of Tohoku's most beloved seasonal events. The Sendai Jazz Festival and other cultural events reflect the city's creative vitality.

Sendai's culinary scene is distinguished by several locally famous specialties. Gyutan — grilled beef tongue — is Sendai's most celebrated dish, served in dedicated restaurants throughout the city, particularly around the station area. Zunda, a paste made from edamame soybeans, is used as a flavoring and topping in sweets, mochi, and shakes that are quintessentially Sendai. Seafood from the Pacific waters off the Sanriku coast, including oysters, sea urchin, and abalone, is available in abundance at the city's markets and restaurants.

The city is a major academic center, home to Tohoku University, one of Japan's Imperial Universities founded in 1907 and renowned for research in science, engineering, and medicine, as well as several other universities and colleges. This concentration of higher education gives Sendai a youthful, intellectual character and supports a strong innovation ecosystem.

In March 2011, Sendai was severely affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and the devastating tsunami that followed, causing significant damage particularly in coastal districts of the city and the surrounding region. The city's subsequent recovery, carried out with remarkable determination and community spirit, has resulted in comprehensive reconstruction and improved disaster preparedness infrastructure that now serves as a model for resilient urban planning worldwide.

Sendai offers an excellent base for exploring the natural beauty of Tohoku, including Matsushima Bay — one of Japan's three canonical scenic views — just 30 kilometers from the city. With its history, culture, food, academia, and natural surroundings, Sendai is one of Japan's most rewarding regional cities.
