Sétif

Sétif stands on the high plateaus of north-eastern Algeria, roughly three hundred kilometres east of Algiers and some eighty kilometres inland from the Mediterranean. At close to eleven hundred metres above sea level it is one of the highest large cities in the country, ringed by broad cereal plains that turn brilliant green in spring. The altitude gives it a continental climate with hot dry summers and genuinely cold winters, and snowfall is normal, which is unusual for a North African city.

Around three hundred thousand people live in the city itself, while the surrounding province counts more than one and a half million. Sétif is one of Algeria's leading economic centres outside the capital, built on grain farming, food processing, pharmaceuticals, plastics, electronics and household appliances. Its merchants have a national reputation for commercial energy, and the city is often called the capital of the eastern highlands.

The site is very old. The Romans developed the settlement of Sitifis as a colony for army veterans at the end of the first century, and it later became the capital of the province of Mauretania Sitifensis, an important Christian centre in late antiquity. Byzantine fortifications and rich mosaic pavements survive from those centuries. After the Arab conquest the town shrank to a modest settlement, and the modern city was laid out by the French army after 1838 on the grid plan that still shapes the centre.

Algerians associate Sétif above all with the events of 8 May 1945, when demonstrations marking the end of the Second World War ended in mass killings across the region. The date is commemorated nationally and is widely regarded as a turning point on the road to the war of independence, and it gives its name to streets, institutions and the city's airport.

The most loved landmark is the Ain El Fouara fountain, a marble figure set above a spring in the heart of the city and unveiled in 1898. Close by are the citadel walls, the covered market and the large municipal park with its lakes and gardens, while the archaeological museum displays the celebrated mosaic of the Triumph of Dionysus found within the city. About fifty kilometres away lie the Roman ruins of Djemila, ancient Cuicul, a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose forum, temples, triumphal arch and mosaics rank among the finest in North Africa.

Daily life revolves around cafés, patisseries and busy shopping streets, and the surrounding countryside is known for its cherries, apples and orchards. The population mixes Arabic-speaking and Berber Chaoui and Kabyle families, and local music and cuisine reflect both traditions.

Ferhat Abbas University is one of the largest in Algeria, with tens of thousands of students spread over several campuses and a strong reputation in engineering, medicine and technology.

The east-west motorway, the railway to Algiers and Constantine and a modern tramway keep the city well connected.

Sétif is popular as a cool, confident highland city that combines Roman heritage, national memory and one of Algeria's most dynamic local economies.
