Sha Tin
Sha Tin is one of Hong Kong's largest and most established New Towns, located in the New Territories along the Shing Mun River channel, approximately 10 kilometers north of the urban center of Kowloon. With a population of approximately 660,000 people, it is one of the most populous districts in Hong Kong and represents one of the most successful examples of planned new town development in Asia. The district is bounded by mountains on three sides and faces the Tolo Harbour to the east, giving it a distinctive setting that combines urban density with accessible natural landscapes.
The development of Sha Tin as a major new town began in the 1970s when the Hong Kong government launched an ambitious program to build entirely new urban communities in the New Territories to alleviate pressure on the overcrowded urban areas of Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. Large-scale land reclamation was carried out along the Shing Mun River to create flat land for the new town, and a comprehensive infrastructure of public housing, commercial centers, schools, hospitals, parks, and transportation facilities was developed over the following decades. Today, the Sha Tin Town Centre forms the commercial and cultural heart of the district, while extensive public and private housing estates extend across the wider area.
Sha Tin is home to several significant cultural and heritage institutions. The Hong Kong Heritage Museum, located in the Che Kung Temple area, is one of the territory's most comprehensive museums, housing permanent and rotating exhibitions on Hong Kong history, traditional Chinese arts, and popular culture including a significant Cantonese opera collection. The Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery, situated on a hillside near Pai Tau Village, is one of Hong Kong's most spectacular religious sites, featuring hundreds of golden Buddha statues lining the steep pathway to the main temple complex and offering panoramic views over the district.
The Sha Tin Racecourse is one of the premier horse racing venues in the world and one of Hong Kong's most beloved institutions. The Jockey Club's two racecourses, Happy Valley and Sha Tin, host horse racing that is one of Hong Kong's most popular spectator sports and generates enormous revenues for charitable and educational causes through the Hong Kong Jockey Club. Race days at Sha Tin are major social occasions that attract tens of thousands of spectators. Adjacent to the racecourse, the Sha Tin Sports Complex provides facilities for a wide range of sports and has hosted major regional and international competitions.
The Ma On Shan area to the east of the Tolo Harbour has been developed as a further extension of the Sha Tin urban area, with additional housing, commercial facilities, and a country park providing recreational access to the surrounding hillsides. The Plover Cove Country Park and other protected areas near Sha Tin provide excellent hiking, cycling along the Shing Mun River channel, and wildlife observation opportunities that are popular with residents seeking outdoor recreation.
Transportation in Sha Tin is excellent, with the MTR East Rail Line providing rapid connections to Kowloon, Hong Kong Island, and across the border to Shenzhen and mainland China. Bus services and the Ma On Shan Rail supplement the MTR network. Sha Tin's combination of comprehensive urban amenities, cultural heritage, excellent transportation, and accessible natural landscapes makes it one of the most livable and successful planned communities in Asia.
