Shāhjānpur

Shāhjānpur is a city in the state of Uttar Pradesh in northern India, situated in the fertile plain between the Garra and Khannaut rivers in the region historically known as Rohilkhand. It lies roughly midway between Lucknow and the Nepalese foothills, in flat country of sugarcane, wheat and mustard fields crossed by canals, about 350 kilometres east of Delhi.

The population is around four hundred thousand. Shāhjānpur is a major centre of the Indian sugar industry, with several large mills processing the cane grown across the district, and it also produces alcohol, carpets, brassware and agricultural machinery. A long-established military cantonment and an ordnance factory add to the local economy, and the city serves as the market town for a densely populated rural district.

The city was founded in 1647 by Diler Khan, a Pathan noble in the service of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, and it was named in the emperor's honour. It became one of the principal towns of the Rohilla Afghans who dominated this region in the eighteenth century, before passing to the Nawabs of Awadh and then to the British. Shāhjānpur was a centre of fighting during the uprising of 1857, and it later produced two of the most celebrated figures of the independence movement, Ram Prasad Bismil and Ashfaqulla Khan, both involved in the Kakori train action of 1925 and both executed for it. Their friendship, one Hindu and one Muslim, is remembered across India as a symbol of shared struggle.

Landmarks include the old Rohilla-era mosques and gateways in the walled quarter, the memorials to Bismil and Ashfaqulla Khan, and the colonial buildings of the cantonment. The Hanuman Dham temple complex is a popular local pilgrimage site, and the riverside ghats fill during religious festivals. The city is best known, however, for one extraordinary tradition. During Holi, a mock ruler known as Laat Sahab is paraded through the streets on a decorated cart, seated backwards and pelted with mud and abuse, in a satirical procession that dates from the colonial period and draws visitors from across the region.

Cultural life is otherwise typical of small-town Uttar Pradesh, with Ram Lila performances, qawwali gatherings, wrestling akharas and a strong tradition of Urdu and Hindi poetry recitals. The local cuisine features sugarcane products, seasonal sweets and the rich Awadhi cooking of the wider region.

Transport is straightforward. The city lies on the railway between Lucknow and Delhi via Bareilly, with regular services in both directions, and national highways connect it to Bareilly, Lucknow and Hardoi. The nearest airports are at Lucknow and Bareilly, and local travel relies on buses, auto-rickshaws and cycle-rickshaws.

Education is provided by a group of degree colleges affiliated to regional universities, along with medical, engineering and agricultural institutions, some of them long established.

Shāhjānpur is significant as a Mughal foundation that became a Rohilla stronghold, an important sugar town and the home of two of India's best-remembered revolutionaries, and its unusual Holi procession gives it a character all its own.
