Shahr-e Qods

Shahr-e Qods lies on the western edge of the Tehran metropolitan area in northern Iran, on the fertile plain that stretches between the capital and the city of Karaj. The Alborz mountains rise sharply to the north, snow-capped for much of the year, while the land around the city is flat and open, historically covered with orchards, vineyards and wheat fields fed by underground irrigation channels. The climate is semi-arid, with hot dry summers and cold winters.

More than three hundred thousand people live in the city, which functions as one of the satellite centres of greater Tehran. Its importance lies in housing and in industry. Shahr-e Qods provides affordable homes for families priced out of the capital, and its industrial estates produce building materials, food products, plastics and machinery, while a large share of residents commute into Tehran each day for work.

The settlement was for centuries a village and small fortified town called Qal'eh Hasan Khan, named after a Qajar-era local notable whose fortress stood at its centre. It was known for its agriculture, particularly grapes and fruit, and lay on the old road west out of Tehran. The transformation came in the second half of the twentieth century, when the explosive growth of the capital pushed development outwards along that road. After the revolution the town was renamed Shahr-e Qods, meaning the city of Jerusalem, and in the following decades its population multiplied many times over as migrants arrived from provinces across Iran, changing it from a rural centre into a dense urban district.

The city itself is modern and residential rather than historic, but its position places a great deal within reach. Chitgar Lake, an artificial lake surrounded by parkland on the western side of Tehran, has become one of the most popular leisure destinations in the region, with boating, cycling paths and restaurants. The Azadi Stadium, Iran's national football arena, and the vast Chitgar forest park are nearby, while central Tehran, with the Golestan Palace, the National Museum, the crown jewels, the Grand Bazaar and the Milad Tower, is under an hour away. The Alborz foothills offer hiking and ski resorts within a short drive.

Everyday life reflects the mixture of people who have settled here, with Persian, Azeri, Kurdish and Lori communities living side by side. Bakeries, teahouses and fruit markets are the centres of neighbourhood life, mosques and religious ceremonies mark the calendar, and Persian traditions such as Nowruz in spring and the winter solstice celebration of Yalda are observed with family gatherings. The regional cuisine of kebabs, herb stews and rice dishes is complemented by local produce from the surrounding plain.

Highways and expressways link the city to Tehran and Karaj, bus lines and shared taxis run constantly, and the metro line towards Karaj passes close by, with improved connections planned. Several colleges and Islamic Azad University branches operate locally, while the great universities of Tehran are within commuting distance.

Shahr-e Qods shows the modern face of urban Iran, a rapidly built city living in the orbit of a great capital.
