Shaoguan is a prefecture-level city situated in the northern part of Guangdong Province in southern China. The Danxia landform type — named after this mountain — is recognized as one of China's most distinctive geological features. Thousands of visitors come each year to hike the trails, cruise the rivers, and marvel at the scenery, including the famously shaped Yangyuan Stone.

The city is also home to Nanhua Temple, one of the most important Buddhist temples in China. Founded in the 5th century AD, Nanhua Temple is associated with Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch of Zen Buddhism, whose remains are enshrined here. It attracts pilgrims and tourists from across China and abroad, serving as both an active place of worship and a remarkable piece of architectural and cultural heritage.

Shaoguan's economy has historically relied on mining, as the region is rich in mineral resources including iron, coal, and various non-ferrous metals. The city hosts one of China's important steel production bases.
