Shibīn al Kawm

Shibin al Kawm lies in the heart of the Nile Delta, roughly halfway between Cairo and Alexandria, in one of the most intensively cultivated landscapes on earth. It is the capital of Monufia governorate, a province of canals, cotton fields, orchards and closely spaced villages where the branches of the Nile spread out towards the Mediterranean. The countryside around the city is green throughout the year, and the climate is warm, dry and gentler than that of Upper Egypt.

The city has a population of around two hundred and fifty thousand and serves as the administrative and commercial centre of a densely populated agricultural province. Cotton ginning, textiles, food processing and light engineering are the main industries, alongside the trade in grain, vegetables, dairy products and citrus that flows through its markets. Monufia is known throughout Egypt for the number of civil servants, officers, teachers and politicians who come from its villages, including two of the country's presidents.

The town's origins are old, its name reflecting a settlement mound of ancient date, and it appears in medieval records as a market centre of the delta. Its modern importance dates from the nineteenth century, when Egypt's cotton boom under Muhammad Ali and his successors made the delta enormously productive and brought railways, canals and administrative reform. Shibin al Kawm became the provincial capital, gaining schools, courts and a station on the line to Cairo, and in the twentieth century it developed as a regional centre of education and industry.

Visitors will find a working Egyptian provincial city rather than a museum town. Its landmarks include the governorate buildings, the main mosques, the covered markets and the tree-lined avenues of the older quarter. The National Museum of Monufia and the memorial to President Anwar Sadat in his home village of Mit Abu al Kum, a short distance away, are the most notable cultural sites, while the surrounding countryside is dotted with village mosques, saints' tombs and irrigation works that have shaped rural life for centuries. Ancient sites are within reach, including the pyramids and the ruins of the delta cities.

Local life follows the rhythm of agriculture and religion, with weekly markets, moulids celebrating local saints, and family gatherings around meals of rice, mulukhiyah, grilled pigeon and fresh cheese. Cafes filled with men playing backgammon and watching football are found on every corner, and the city's streets grow busy in the cool of the evening.

The railway and the agricultural road to Cairo and Alexandria carry frequent traffic, and the desert highway is close enough to make either city an easy day trip. Menoufia University, with its medical, engineering and electronic engineering faculties, is one of the respected public universities of Egypt and gives the city a substantial student population.

Shibin al Kawm matters as the capital of a province at the agricultural and human heart of Egypt, a place that feeds the country and supplies much of its professional class.
