The city is also a center of the Japanese motorcycle and automobile industries. Yamaha Motor Company was founded in nearby Iwata and maintains significant operations in the prefecture. Honda also has deep roots in the Shizuoka area. The region's tradition of precision manufacturing has made the Tokai-Shizuoka corridor one of Japan's most important industrial zones.

Shizuoka is a stop on the Tokaido Shinkansen bullet train, providing fast connections to Tokyo (under 60 minutes) and Osaka. The city has a pleasant historic district, lively shopping streets, and the Sumpu Castle Park, which hosts cultural events. The nearby Miho no Matsubara pine grove, listed as part of the UNESCO "Fujisan" World Heritage Site, is among the most beautiful coastal scenery in Japan.
