Shizuoka

Shizuoka is the prefectural capital of Shizuoka Prefecture, located in central Japan on the Pacific coast of Honshu island. With a population of approximately 685,000, it is one of the major cities of the Tokai region, situated between the Abe River and Oi River basins with the Tokaido coastal corridor linking it to Tokyo to the northeast and Nagoya to the west. The city is perhaps most famously associated with Mount Fuji, Japan's highest peak, which rises majestically to the northwest and is visible from many parts of the city and prefecture on clear days.

The Shizuoka area has a history stretching back to ancient times. The region was historically the domain of Imagawa, Takeda, and Tokugawa clans during the Sengoku period of feudal warfare. Most significantly, Shizuoka — then known as Sumpu — was the retirement residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, who spent his final years here after unifying Japan. Sumpu Castle, though largely destroyed over centuries, has been partially reconstructed and remains one of the city's historical landmarks.

Shizuoka Prefecture, and the broader region surrounding the city, is Japan's most important producer of green tea. The gentle slopes of the Shizuoka hills, covered in meticulously cultivated tea rows, produce a significant share of Japan's annual tea harvest. The Shizuoka tea fields are one of Japan's most iconic agricultural landscapes, and local tea farms welcome visitors for tea picking and tasting experiences. Green tea culture permeates daily life in the city, from specialty tea shops to green tea-flavored local sweets and cuisine.

The city is also a center of the Japanese motorcycle and automobile industries. Yamaha Motor Company was founded in nearby Iwata and maintains significant operations in the prefecture. Honda also has deep roots in the Shizuoka area. The region's tradition of precision manufacturing has made the Tokai-Shizuoka corridor one of Japan's most important industrial zones.

Shizuoka is a stop on the Tokaido Shinkansen bullet train, providing fast connections to Tokyo (under 60 minutes) and Osaka. The city has a pleasant historic district, lively shopping streets, and the Sumpu Castle Park, which hosts cultural events. The nearby Miho no Matsubara pine grove, listed as part of the UNESCO "Fujisan" World Heritage Site, is among the most beautiful coastal scenery in Japan.

Shizuoka's extraordinary setting between the sea, tea-covered hills, and the eternal silhouette of Mount Fuji, combined with its rich samurai heritage and industrial vitality, makes it one of central Japan's most rewarding and characterful cities.
