Shouguang
Shouguang is a county-level city located in Weifang, a prefecture-level city in Shandong Province, northeastern China. Situated in the Bohai Sea coastal region, it lies approximately 200 kilometers southeast of Beijing and covers a flat, fertile agricultural area that has been farmed for thousands of years. With a population of around one million people, Shouguang may not rank among China's most famous cities, but it holds an extraordinary and disproportionate importance in the country's food supply chain and agricultural innovation landscape.
Shouguang has earned the title of "China's Vegetable Capital" — a distinction based on its remarkable output of greenhouse-grown vegetables that feed hundreds of millions of people across the country. The city pioneered the development of solar-powered greenhouse agriculture in China in the late 1980s, when local farmers developed an innovative design for low-cost, energy-efficient vegetable greenhouses. This technology spread rapidly across northern China and revolutionized year-round vegetable production in a country with cold winters. Today, Shouguang produces an astonishing variety and volume of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, eggplants, and leafy vegetables that are distributed to markets throughout China and increasingly exported abroad.
The China Shouguang International Vegetables Science and Technology Fair (commonly called the Shouguang Vegetable Expo) is held annually and attracts hundreds of thousands of agricultural professionals, researchers, farmers, and businesses from across China and the world. This event has grown into one of the most significant agricultural trade fairs in Asia, showcasing the latest in greenhouse technology, seed development, crop science, and food processing innovation.
Beyond its agricultural fame, Shouguang is also notable for its salt production heritage. The coastal areas have historically produced sea salt, and salt-related industries have been part of the local economy for centuries. The city also has connections to ancient Chinese history — according to tradition, the area near Shouguang was where Cangjie, the legendary inventor of Chinese writing, is said to have created the first Chinese characters, a claim commemorated by local cultural sites.
The city has developed supporting industries including food processing, agricultural equipment manufacturing, cold chain logistics, and seed research. Several major Chinese food companies and agricultural enterprises have established operations here, taking advantage of the concentration of agricultural expertise and supply chain infrastructure.
Shouguang represents one of China's most impressive examples of rural economic transformation through agricultural innovation. Its story — from a farming county to the vegetable capital of the world's most populous nation — is a remarkable testament to the power of technological adaptation and local entrepreneurship in shaping China's food security and rural economy.
