Shymkent is the third-largest city in Kazakhstan and the administrative center of the Turkestan Region, located in the southern part of the country near the border with Uzbekistan. Metallurgy, chemical manufacturing, food processing, and construction materials production round out the city's industrial base.

Shymkent International Airport connects the city with Almaty, Astana, and regional destinations. Road and rail connections link Shymkent with Almaty, Tashkent in Uzbekistan, and other cities across the region. The city's transportation infrastructure has been improved significantly as part of Kazakhstan's investment in modern connectivity.
