Siem Reap
Siem Reap is a city in northwestern Cambodia that serves as the gateway to one of the world's most extraordinary archaeological sites, the Angkor temple complex. Located in the Siem Reap Province and situated near the northern shore of the Tonlé Sap lake, Southeast Asia's largest freshwater lake, Siem Reap has transformed from a quiet provincial town into one of Southeast Asia's most dynamic and visited tourist destinations over the past three decades.
With a population of approximately 250,000 people and growing rapidly, Siem Reap has experienced extraordinary development driven almost entirely by tourism related to the Angkor Archaeological Park. The city's name translates roughly as "Siamese Defeated," commemorating a Khmer victory over Siamese forces from what is now Thailand. Today it is a bustling, cosmopolitan city with an exceptional range of accommodation, restaurants, and entertainment catering to international visitors.
The history of the broader Siem Reap region is inseparable from the Khmer Empire, which dominated much of mainland Southeast Asia from the 9th to the 15th centuries and built the extraordinary temple cities of Angkor. The Khmer Empire at its height was one of the most powerful and culturally sophisticated civilizations in Asia, constructing hundreds of temples, vast hydraulic systems, and urban infrastructure across the landscape of present-day Cambodia.
The Angkor Archaeological Park, located just north of Siem Reap, encompasses some 400 square kilometers of temples, hydraulic structures, and urban remains from the Khmer Empire. Angkor Wat, built in the early 12th century by King Suryavarman II and dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu, is the world's largest religious monument and an icon recognized around the globe. Its five towers, intricate bas-relief galleries depicting scenes from Hindu epics, and perfect proportions make it one of the greatest architectural achievements in human history. Angkor Thom, the last great capital of the Khmer Empire, contains the remarkable Bayon temple with its 216 serene carved faces, as well as the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King.
Beyond Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom, the archaeological park includes dozens of other remarkable temples including the jungle-encrusted Ta Prohm, famous for the massive trees growing through its ruins, and the pink sandstone temple of Banteay Srei with its extraordinarily fine carvings. The entire complex was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992 and receives over two million visitors annually.
Within Siem Reap itself, the Old Market area, known as Phsar Chas, is a lively hub of cafes, restaurants, and shops. Pub Street and the surrounding neighborhood offer a concentrated nightlife and dining scene. The Angkor National Museum provides excellent context for understanding Khmer civilization before visiting the temples. Traditional Apsara dance performances are available at various venues and provide a living connection to the classical Khmer performing arts.
Siem Reap International Airport connects the city to major hubs across Asia and beyond. The city's combination of world-class archaeological wonders, improving hospitality infrastructure, authentic Khmer cuisine, and access to the remarkable natural environment of the Tonlé Sap lake make it one of the most compelling destinations in Southeast Asia, drawing travelers from every corner of the world.
