Sighișoara is a medieval citadel city located in the heart of Transylvania in central Romania, in the Mureș County. Situated in the valley of the Târnava Mare River, surrounded by the rolling hills and dense forests of the Transylvanian Plateau, it lies approximately 100 kilometers east of Cluj-Napoca and 200 kilometers northwest of Bucharest. The city is one of the best-preserved medieval fortified towns in Europe and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its remarkable concentration of architectural heritage dating from the twelfth to sixteenth centuries.

Sighișoara has a population of around 28,000 people, making it one of the smaller cities in Romania, yet its cultural and historical significance is immense. The city is divided into two distinct parts: the upper hilltop citadel, known locally as Cetate, and the lower town that developed along the river valley. The citadel, enclosed by its original medieval walls and towers, is still inhabited, making it one of the few continuously lived-in fortified medieval city centers in the world.

The city was founded by Saxon colonists, known in Romanian as Sași, who were invited to settle Transylvania by Hungarian kings beginning in the twelfth century. Known in German as Schäßburg, Sighișoara grew into a prosperous town of craftsmen and merchants during the medieval period, defended by fourteen towers, each maintained by a specific guild. The city is also historically notable as the birthplace of Vlad III of Wallachia, commonly known as Vlad the Impaler, the fifteenth-century ruler who inspired Bram Stoker's fictional Count Dracula. The house where he is believed to have been born still stands in the citadel and now operates as a restaurant.

The Clock Tower, built in the fourteenth century and rising to 64 meters, is the most iconic structure in Sighișoara and serves as the main gateway to the citadel. It houses the city's history museum and offers sweeping views over the rooftops and surrounding hills from its upper levels. The Church on the Hill, reached by a covered wooden staircase of 176 steps, is a Gothic Lutheran church surrounded by a historic cemetery containing centuries-old gravestones with German inscriptions. The Scholars' Staircase, built to protect students from winter weather on their way to school, is one of the most photographed structures in the city.

The atmosphere of the citadel is genuinely medieval, with cobblestone streets, colorful painted houses in shades of ochre, terracotta, and rose, and a quiet intensity that is particularly moving in the early morning or late evening when day-trippers have departed. The annual Medieval Festival held in Sighișoara each July transforms the citadel into an open-air stage for medieval crafts, music, jousting, and performances, drawing visitors from across Europe.

Sighișoara is accessible by train from Cluj-Napoca and Brașov, with the journey taking around two to three hours. Regional buses also serve the city. The town is a natural stopping point on the scenic Transylvania route connecting several of Romania's major heritage sites.
