Current Time in Singa, Sudan

Singa stands on the eastern bank of the Blue Nile in east-central Sudan, about three hundred and fifty kilometres upstream from Khartoum, and serves as the capital of Sennar State. The surrounding country is flat savannah plain, dotted with acacia and dom palms, green during the rains and dusty gold for the rest of the year. The climate is hot and semi-arid, with very high temperatures before the summer rains and a short, intense wet season between June and September when the river rises dramatically.

The town has a population in the region of a hundred thousand and functions as the administrative and market centre for a rich agricultural region. Sorghum, sesame, sunflower, groundnuts and cotton are grown on the plains and along the river, gum arabic is collected from acacia woodland, and large herds of cattle, sheep and camels are traded here. Irrigation schemes fed by the Blue Nile and the Sennar Dam downstream have made this one of the most productive farming zones in the country.

The region has deep historical roots. For more than three centuries it lay at the heart of the Funj Sultanate of Sennar, an Islamic state founded in 1504 that controlled the middle Nile and left a legacy of Sufi brotherhoods, scholarship and distinctive local architecture. Older still is the discovery that gave the town an international scientific reputation: in 1924 a fossilised human skull was found in a river deposit nearby. Known as the Singa cranium and dated to well over a hundred thousand years ago, it is one of the most important early human fossils from Africa and continues to be studied by palaeoanthropologists worldwide.

Life in Singa centres on the river and the market. The Blue Nile is used for washing, fishing, ferry crossings and irrigation, and its banks are the coolest place to sit in the evening. The souq brings together farmers, herders and traders from a wide area, selling grain, livestock, dates, spices and cloth. Hospitality is expressed in rounds of coffee spiced with ginger and cardamom, and festivals, weddings and the celebrations of local Sufi orders are the main public occasions.

To the east lies Dinder National Park, the largest protected area in Sudan and a UNESCO biosphere reserve, a wilderness of seasonal wetlands and woodland where lion, giraffe, roan antelope, ostrich and great numbers of migratory birds are found, and Singa is one of the usual approaches to it.

The University of Sinnar has its main campus in the town, offering courses in agriculture, veterinary science, education and medicine, and it is the principal centre of higher learning in the state.

Roads link Singa to Khartoum, Wad Madani and the Ethiopian border, and a railway line runs through the region, though services have been irregular. Like much of the country, the town has been affected by the conflict that began in 2023, which displaced many residents.

Singa is important as a Nile market town, a centre of Sudanese agriculture and the site of one of Africa's most significant fossil discoveries.
