Sinŭiju

Sinŭiju stands in the far northwest of North Korea on the left bank of the Amnok River, known in Chinese as the Yalu, directly opposite the Chinese city of Dandong. It is the capital of North Pyongan Province and occupies flat, low lying land near the river's mouth on the Yellow Sea, an area of tidal flats, rice fields and reed beds. The climate is continental with a monsoon influence, bringing cold dry winters and warm humid summers.

Around three hundred and fifty thousand people live in the city, making it one of the larger urban centres in the country. Its importance is above all as a frontier and trading city, for the overwhelming majority of North Korea's overland trade with China passes through here, and the traffic across the river shapes daily life.

The city is comparatively young. It was developed in the early twentieth century, during the period of Japanese rule, as a modern port and railway town at the point where the line from Seoul crossed into Manchuria, replacing the older town of Uiju upstream. Industry followed, and the completion of the enormous Supung dam on the Amnok in the early 1940s, at the time one of the largest hydroelectric projects in Asia, provided power for chemical works, paper mills and light manufacturing that remain part of the local economy along with cosmetics, textiles and food processing.

The Sino Korean Friendship Bridge, built in 1943, carries the road and rail link to Dandong and is the single most important crossing between the two countries. A newer bridge downstream, completed in the 2010s, stands ready but has not entered regular service. Trains from Sinŭiju run to Pyongyang and, historically, onward to Beijing and Moscow, which made the city a gateway for the small numbers of foreign travellers entering the country by land.

The surrounding district has considerable historical resonance. The island of Wihwa in the river is remembered as the place where the general Yi Songgye turned his army back in 1388, an act that led to the founding of the Joseon dynasty. Uiju, a short distance upstream, was for centuries the point where Korean embassies departed for the Chinese capital.

Within the city there are broad boulevards, monuments, a revolutionary museum, parks along the riverbank and a botanical garden, and from the Chinese side visitors commonly view the skyline and the riverfront by boat. In 2002 the authorities announced a special administrative region here intended to attract foreign investment, though the plan was not implemented as originally conceived, and various economic zones have been designated since.

Education includes teacher training and technical institutes, with a university of light industry and colleges serving the province.

Sinŭiju is significant as North Korea's principal window on China, a border city whose bridges, railways and river traffic connect one of the world's most closed countries to its largest neighbour.
