Sitges

Sitges is a cosmopolitan seaside town located approximately 35 kilometers southwest of Barcelona on the Garraf coast of Catalonia, Spain. With a permanent population of around 29,000 inhabitants, Sitges is one of the most internationally recognized and celebrated small towns in Spain, known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant cultural life, welcoming LGBTQ+ community, and one of the world's most important film festivals. The town's combination of excellent beaches, stunning Modernist villas, lively nightlife, and relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere has made it a beloved destination for visitors from across Europe and beyond.

Sitges has been a magnet for artists and creative individuals since the late 19th century, when the Catalan painter Santiago Rusiñol established his studio here and attracted a group of Modernist artists and intellectuals who transformed the town into a center of the Renaixença cultural movement. Rusiñol's house, Cau Ferrat, now a museum housing his collection of El Greco paintings, Art Nouveau glasswork, and Catalan ceramics, remains one of the finest small museums in Spain. The neighboring Maricel Museum, built in the early 20th century by the American millionaire Charles Deering, contains a collection of medieval and Baroque art in a spectacular seafront setting.

The Sitges International Film Festival, held each October, is one of the oldest and most prestigious fantasy and horror film festivals in the world, having been founded in 1968. The festival has played a crucial role in the development of genre cinema internationally, premiering works that have gone on to become classics of world cinema. Every October, the town fills with film industry professionals, critics, and enthusiasts who attend screenings at venues throughout the historic center, creating an exceptional atmosphere of cinematic celebration.

The Sitges Carnival (Carnaval de Sitges) is another world-famous event, held in February in the days before Lent. The carnival is celebrated with extraordinary elaborateness and creativity, with elaborate costumes, spectacular floats, and inclusive celebrations that last for two weeks and attract hundreds of thousands of visitors. The parade of the Rua de la Disbauxa (Parade of Excess) is the main event, followed by the comic Rua de l'Extermini (Parade of Extermination) on Ash Wednesday.

Sitges has been an internationally recognized LGBTQ+-friendly destination since the 1960s, when the town's tolerant atmosphere attracted the gay community during a period of repression in Spain. Today, Sitges is one of Europe's most important LGBTQ+ travel destinations, with Pride celebrations attracting visitors from across the continent. The town's inclusive character extends to its bars, restaurants, beaches, and hotels, creating a genuinely welcoming atmosphere for all visitors.

The town's seafront is lined with 17 beaches stretching along the coast, offering swimming, sunbathing, and water sports. The Church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla, perched dramatically on a promontory above the sea at the end of the seafront promenade, is the iconic symbol of Sitges and appears in almost every photograph of the town. Sitges successfully combines the elegance of its artistic heritage with the vitality of its cultural events and the pleasure of its Mediterranean setting, making it a uniquely multifaceted destination.
