Sochi

Sochi is a resort city in southern Russia, stretched along the north-eastern shore of the Black Sea in Krasnodar Krai. It occupies an exceptionally narrow strip of land between the water and the western slopes of the Caucasus Mountains, and its territory extends for about 145 kilometres of coastline, making it one of the longest cities in the world. The mountains shelter it from cold northern air, giving Sochi a humid subtropical climate found almost nowhere else in Russia, with palms, magnolias and tea plantations growing within sight of snow-covered peaks.

Around four hundred and fifty thousand people live here permanently, and many times that number arrive each year as visitors. Sochi is the undisputed summer capital of Russia, the place where the country goes to the sea, and it also serves as an unofficial second seat of government, since presidential residences and official meetings are frequently held here.

The area was contested for centuries between the Ottoman Empire, local Circassian peoples and Russia, and a fort founded in 1838 marks the beginning of the modern town. Its development as a spa began at the end of the nineteenth century, when the sulphur springs at Matsesta were exploited for treatment, and accelerated dramatically in the 1930s, when grand sanatoriums in monumental classical style were built along the shore for Soviet workers. The most transformative event came in 2014, when Sochi hosted the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, an undertaking that rebuilt roads, railways, hotels and entire districts.

Landmarks reflect these layers. The seafront promenade, the Riviera Park and the ornate Winter Theatre belong to the resort tradition, while the Sochi Arboretum, planted in the 1890s, holds a remarkable collection of subtropical trees on terraces above the sea. The Olympic Park at Adler, with its ring of arenas around the fountain and the Fisht Stadium, later used in the 2018 football World Cup, is now a permanent attraction, as is the motor racing circuit that winds between the venues. In the mountains above, Krasnaya Polyana has become Russia's leading ski destination, with cable cars rising to over two thousand metres. The dacha where Stalin spent his summers is preserved in the hills and open to visitors.

Cultural life mixes resort entertainment with the traditions of the Caucasus. Concerts, film festivals, circus performances and open-air markets fill the summer, and Armenian, Georgian, Adyghe and Greek communities give the local food scene unusual variety. Tea grown in the hills north of the city is the northernmost commercial tea in the world.

Transport is excellent by Russian standards. Sochi International Airport at Adler is one of the busiest in the country, a railway runs the length of the coast and up into the mountains, and the highway and rail link built for the Olympics connects the shore to the ski resorts in under an hour. A seaport handles cruise and passenger traffic.

Sochi matters because it gives Russia a genuinely subtropical coast and a world-class winter sports region within the same city boundary, a combination that few places anywhere can offer.
