Current Time in Sohag, Egypt

Sohag lies on the west bank of the Nile in Upper Egypt, roughly midway between Asyut and Luxor, in a narrow strip of green fields hemmed in on both sides by desert cliffs. It is the capital of Sohag governorate, one of the most traditional and densely settled regions of the Nile valley, where villages of mud brick and palm groves crowd the riverbank. Summers are extremely hot and dry, winters warm by day and cool at night, and rain is almost unknown.

The city has a population of around a quarter of a million, while the governorate as a whole contains several million people. Its economy depends on agriculture, especially sugar cane, wheat, cotton and dates, together with textile mills, food processing and the trade of a large rural hinterland. Sohag is also known for handwoven textiles and for pottery produced in the surrounding villages.

The region is one of the oldest inhabited parts of Egypt. A short distance away stands Abydos, the sacred city of the god Osiris and one of the most important religious sites of the ancient world, where the temple of Seti the First preserves some of the finest painted reliefs ever carved and the famous king list recording the pharaohs. Nearby Akhmim, across the river, was a major town in pharaonic and Greco-Roman times and yielded a colossal statue of the princess Meritamun, now displayed in an open museum. In the Christian era the area became a heartland of Egyptian monasticism, and Sohag remains home to one of the largest Coptic communities in the country.

The most striking monuments of that period are the White Monastery and the Red Monastery on the desert edge west of the city. The White Monastery, founded in the fifth century by the abbot Shenoute, is built of massive limestone blocks taken from ancient temples and looks from outside like a fortress, while the Red Monastery contains extraordinary wall paintings of saints and biblical scenes restored to their original brilliance. Both are among the greatest surviving examples of early Christian architecture and art.

Local life centres on family, farming and faith, with Coptic and Muslim festivals following one another through the year, weekly markets in the villages, and river ferries carrying people across the Nile. The regional cuisine features flat country bread, fresh cheese, molasses from the cane harvest, and dishes of beans and lentils. Traditional crafts, especially weaving and embroidery, are still practised in Akhmim.

The main railway between Cairo and Aswan stops here, an agricultural road and a desert highway run along the valley, and an international airport opened in recent years connects the city with the Gulf. Sohag University, with faculties of medicine, engineering, arts and archaeology, is one of the largest institutions in Upper Egypt.

Sohag is significant as the centre of a region holding some of Egypt's most sacred ancient sites and its most remarkable early Christian monuments, away from the usual tourist routes.
