Current Time in Solwezi, Zambia

Solwezi lies in the northwest of Zambia, on a high plateau of miombo woodland roughly thirteen hundred metres above sea level, some one hundred and eighty kilometres west of the traditional Copperbelt towns. Streams and dambos thread through the surrounding country on their way to the Kabompo and eventually the Zambezi, and the climate follows the familiar central African pattern of a warm wet season from November to April, a cool dry winter and a hot spell before the rains return.

The town is the capital of North-Western Province and has grown rapidly in recent decades to a population of well over one hundred thousand, with the surrounding district holding considerably more. That growth has a single cause, for Solwezi has become the centre of what Zambians call the new Copperbelt, the mining frontier that has transformed a quiet provincial capital into one of the most economically important places in the country.

The Kansanshi mine on the edge of town is the largest copper mine in Africa by output, producing copper and significant quantities of gold, and it stands on a site where copper was worked by local people long before Europeans arrived, with ancient shallow diggings recorded by the first prospectors at the end of the nineteenth century. Further west, the Lumwana and Kalumbila operations have opened enormous new deposits and built entire company towns around them. Together these mines account for a large share of Zambia's copper production and export earnings.

The area is the homeland of the Kaonde people, whose chiefs governed the region long before colonial administration arrived, and Kaonde language, farming traditions and ceremonies remain central to local identity alongside communities from across Zambia who have moved here for work. Before the mining boom the district lived from subsistence farming, honey, timber and small trade, and agriculture still matters, with maize, cassava, groundnuts and pineapples grown widely.

The best known heritage site is the Kifubwa Stream rock shelter just outside town, where geometric engravings were cut into a sandstone face by hunter gatherers thousands of years ago, protected today as a national monument in a shady gorge beside a small waterfall. Mutanda Falls, where the river spreads across a rocky shelf, is a popular picnic spot, and the wider province contains West Lunga National Park, the source of the Zambezi near Mwinilunga and some of the least visited wilderness in southern Africa.

Solwezi itself has developed quickly, gaining shopping centres, hotels, banks and a lively market, while housing and services have struggled to keep pace with arrivals. A tarred highway links it to Chingola and the Copperbelt, roads run west toward Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and an airport serves the mining companies. Colleges and a university campus provide training in mining, health and teaching.

Solwezi is significant as the heart of Zambia's modern copper industry and as the gateway to the country's remote northwest.
