Sonīpat
Sonīpat lies in the state of Haryana in northern India, about forty five kilometres north of Delhi on the flat alluvial plain between the Yamuna River and the Aravalli foothills. It forms part of the National Capital Region and sits on the Grand Trunk Road corridor, the historic highway that has carried traffic between Delhi and the Punjab for centuries. The climate is that of the northern plains, with intensely hot summers, a humid monsoon and cold, foggy winter mornings.
The city has a population approaching three hundred thousand, with a considerably larger district around it. Its economy combines agriculture, for the surrounding farmland produces wheat, rice, sugar cane and vegetables for the Delhi market, with a long established manufacturing base in bicycles and bicycle parts, hosiery and knitwear, engineering goods, footwear and light electricals. Industrial estates at Kundli and Rai extend along the highway, and the city has become an important logistics point on the corridor between Delhi and the northern states.
Sonīpat is very old. Local tradition identifies it with Sonprastha or Swarnaprastha, one of the five villages that the Pandavas of the Mahabharata are said to have demanded from the Kauravas, and the name is popularly explained as the city of gold. Archaeological finds in the district reach back to the Painted Grey Ware period. Under the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughals it was a staging post on the imperial road, and monuments such as the tomb of Khwaja Khizr, an elegant Lodi era structure, and several old mosques and stepwells survive from those centuries.
The city's most striking recent development is education. The Rajiv Gandhi Education City at Rai has attracted a remarkable cluster of institutions, including Ashoka University, known for its liberal arts programme, O P Jindal Global University, the World University of Design, campuses of the National Institute of Fashion Technology and the Indian Institute of Information Technology, and several research centres. Thousands of students from across India and abroad now live in what was recently farmland, and this has begun to change the character of the district.
Transport is a strong point. National Highway 44 and the Kundli Manesar Palwal expressway pass through, the main railway line to Ambala and Amritsar serves the station, and a rapid rail corridor towards Delhi and Panipat is planned. Delhi's airport and metro network are within reach, and buses run frequently to the capital.
Attractions in the city itself are modest, but there are old temples, busy bazaars known for textiles and sweets, and the Baba Dham complex. Nearby Panipat, with its three decisive battlefields, and the historic sites of Delhi are easy day trips.
Haryanvi culture is strongly present in wrestling and kabaddi, in folk song and in a rural cuisine of bajra roti, lassi and seasonal greens. The state's reputation for producing champion wrestlers and athletes is felt in local akharas and training centres.
Sonīpat is important as an industrial and educational satellite of Delhi with roots reaching back into ancient Indian tradition.
