Sopron

Sopron is a picturesque city in northwestern Hungary, situated directly on the Austrian border in the foothills of the Alps. With a population of approximately 62,000, it serves as the administrative center of Győr-Moson-Sopron County. Sopron is one of Hungary's best-preserved medieval cities, renowned for its remarkably intact historic core, its excellent wines, and a unique history that earned it the title of Civitas Fidelissima — the Most Loyal City — which still appears on its coat of arms.

The city was settled during the Roman period as Scarabantia, a prosperous town along the Amber Road connecting the Baltic to the Mediterranean. Substantial Roman remains, including a colonnade and the foundations of a forum, have been uncovered in the city center and can be visited today. In the medieval period, Sopron developed as an important border fortress and trading town, building the circuit of walls and towers that still define its character. The Firewatch Tower, rising above the main square on Roman and medieval foundations, is the city's most iconic structure and offers panoramic views over the rooftops and, on clear days, into Austria.

Sopron earned its enduring epithet of Most Loyal City following a 1921 plebiscite. In the aftermath of World War One, the Treaty of Trianon assigned much of western Hungary to the newly created Austrian republic. Sopron and eight surrounding villages were permitted to vote on whether to join Austria or remain part of Hungary. Despite close proximity to Vienna and strong economic ties with Austria, the majority chose Hungary. This act of loyalty is commemorated across the city and remains a source of profound local pride.

The historic inner city of Sopron is a remarkable architectural ensemble contained within partially intact medieval walls. The Főtér (Main Square) is surrounded by Baroque palaces, Gothic churches, and Renaissance buildings that create one of Central Europe's most harmonious urban spaces. The Goat Church, a thirteenth-century Franciscan structure, the Old Synagogue — one of the best-preserved medieval synagogues in Central Europe — and the numerous aristocratic mansions that line the narrow streets all contribute to an atmosphere of layered historic richness.

Sopron is an important center of the Hungarian wine industry, situated at the edge of a wine region known particularly for its Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch) reds. Wine cellars and tastings are a significant part of local culture and tourism. The Pannonian Hills and surrounding forests provide excellent conditions for hiking and cycling, while the nearby Fertő Lake — shared with Austria and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — offers swimming, birdwatching, and cycling along its reedy shores.

The city has strong educational and cultural traditions. The University of Sopron, specializing in forestry, wood sciences, and related fields, has deep roots here, with the institution tracing its foundation to 1735. The Liszt Ferenc Conference and Cultural Center hosts concerts, exhibitions, and events throughout the year. The composer Franz Liszt was born in the nearby village of Raiding (then part of Hungary) and the region celebrates his legacy with regular music events.

With its location just an hour from Vienna by road, Sopron attracts a significant number of Austrian and international visitors who come to enjoy its medieval streets, its spa facilities, and the excellent local wines. Its combination of authentic Hungarian character, extraordinary historical preservation, and easy access to one of Europe's great capitals makes Sopron one of the most rewarding and underrated destinations in Central Europe.
