Sorocaba

Sorocaba is a major industrial and commercial city in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, located approximately 100 kilometers southwest of the state capital, São Paulo. With a population of approximately 700,000, it is one of the most economically important cities in the interior of São Paulo State and serves as the regional hub for a broad area of western São Paulo. Situated in the Sorocaba River valley, the city has a long history rooted in colonial agriculture and cattle-driving traditions.

Founded in 1661 as a Jesuit mission settlement, Sorocaba developed into a significant commercial center during the colonial era as a hub for the cattle trade. The city was situated along the legendary "Caminho do Peabiru" and later on the cattle-driving routes that brought livestock from the southern pampas to the markets of São Paulo and Minas Gerais. The Sorocaba Fair was among the most important cattle fairs in colonial Brazil, drawing merchants and drovers from across the country and shaping the city's commercial identity for centuries.

Sorocaba's industrial transformation began in the 19th century with the arrival of the textile industry, particularly cotton and wool mills, which established the city as one of Brazil's earliest industrial centers. The expansion of the railway network — including the Sorocabana Railway — further cemented its role as a logistics hub. In the 20th and 21st centuries, Sorocaba diversified into metalworking, chemicals, food processing, and the automotive supply chain, becoming one of the most industrially diverse cities in São Paulo State.

The city has a notable cultural and educational profile. The Federal University of São Carlos has a campus in Sorocaba, and there are numerous private universities and technical institutions serving the city's large and well-educated population. Sorocaba Botanical Garden is one of the finest in the state, offering extensive collections of native and exotic plants in a beautifully landscaped setting. The Sorocaba Municipal Zoo, one of Brazil's largest and most visited, is a beloved destination for families across the region.

Sorocaba is well connected by highways — the Castelo Branco Highway provides direct access to São Paulo — and has an active airport serving regional and charter operations. The city also has a distinctive cycling culture, with an extensive network of bike paths along the Sorocaba River and throughout the urban area, earning it recognition as one of Brazil's most cycle-friendly cities.

Sorocaba's blend of deep colonial history, pioneering industrial heritage, rich natural attractions, and modern economic dynamism makes it one of Brazil's most well-rounded interior cities — a place where tradition and innovation coexist within the energetic heart of São Paulo State.
