South Dublin is one of the four administrative counties that together make up the Dublin region on the east coast of Ireland. It covers the south-western part of the capital, bounded by the River Liffey to the north and rising to the Dublin Mountains in the south. Its principal towns are Tallaght, Clondalkin, Lucan and Rathfarnham, along with Templeogue, Firhouse, Palmerstown, Saggart and Rathcoole, and its landscape ranges from dense suburbs and business parks to farmland, reservoirs and heather-covered uplands.

Around three hundred thousand people live in the county, making it one of the most populous local authority areas in Ireland and one of the youngest in age profile. The economy is strong and internationally connected. Grange Castle Business Park hosts major pharmaceutical and biotechnology plants, while Citywest and the surrounding districts contain large technology campuses, data centres and offices for global software and internet companies. Retail, logistics, construction and public services employ many others.

The area has an unexpectedly long history. Tallaght takes its name from an Irish phrase meaning plague grave, and a monastery founded there in the eighth century by Saint Maelruain became a leading centre of the reforming Céli Dé movement, producing important religious manuscripts. Clondalkin preserves one of the finest round towers in Ireland, a slender stone bell tower over a thousand years old that survived Viking raids. The district later lay within the Pale, the fortified zone of English control around Dublin, and remained largely rural until the middle of the twentieth century, when Dublin expanded outwards and new towns were built to house tens of thousands of families. Rapid, sometimes difficult growth in the 1970s and 1980s has since been followed by substantial investment in transport, parks and civic amenities.

Visitors can walk the Dublin Mountains Way along the ridge above the city, taking in views over the whole bay, and climb Montpelier Hill to the ruined lodge known as the Hell Fire Club, wrapped in eighteenth-century legend. Corkagh Park, Tymon Park and the wooded estate of Rathfarnham Castle offer green space, while the castle itself, restored by the state, gives a glimpse of Georgian grandeur. Cultural life centres on the Civic Theatre and the Rua Red arts centre in Tallaght, and Tallaght Stadium is home to one of the most successful football clubs in the country.

The county is notably diverse, with communities from Poland, Brazil, Nigeria, India, Romania and many other countries adding to a long-established local identity. Traditional Irish music, Gaelic games, festivals and a lively pub culture remain central.

The Luas tram runs from the city centre to Tallaght and Saggart, commuter rail serves Clondalkin and Adamstown, and the M50 motorway rings the county. Technological University Dublin has a large campus in Tallaght, and a major hospital serves the region.

South Dublin matters as an engine of the Irish economy and as an accessible base for exploring both the capital and the mountains on its doorstep.
