Stoke-on-Trent lies in north Staffordshire, in the English Midlands, on the upper reaches of the River Trent where the Pennine foothills meet the Cheshire plain. With about two hundred and sixty thousand inhabitants, it is unusual among British cities in having no single dominant centre: it was formed in 1910 by the federation of six neighbouring towns, Tunstall, Burslem, Hanley, Stoke, Fenton and Longton, each of which retains its own high street, park and civic buildings. Arnold Bennett, the novelist born here, made the district famous as the Five Towns, quietly leaving one of them out.

The area is known universally as the Potteries. Local clay, coal and marl made it the centre of the British ceramics industry from the eighteenth century, and the names that grew here are known worldwide: Wedgwood, whose founder Josiah Wedgwood combined scientific experiment with brilliant marketing and campaigned for the canal that carried his wares to port; Spode, where bone china was perfected; and Minton, Doulton, Moorcroft and Burleigh among many others. At its height the skyline was filled with hundreds of bottle-shaped kilns, and although only a few dozen survive as monuments, the industry continues in modern factories and in a lively community of small studios and designers.

Visitors can see the process at first hand. The Gladstone Pottery Museum preserves a complete Victorian factory around a cobbled yard with four bottle kilns, with demonstrations of throwing, decorating and flower making. The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery holds the finest collection of Staffordshire ceramics in existence and also displays a Spitfire, honouring Reginald Mitchell, the aircraft designer born nearby. Several manufacturers run factory tours and shops, and the World of Wedgwood at Barlaston combines a museum, a working factory and a tea room.

The Trent and Mersey Canal, engineered by James Brindley, still threads through the city and is a favourite with narrowboaters, while the Caldon Canal climbs towards the Staffordshire Moorlands. Trentham Estate, with its Italian gardens, lake and landscape by Capability Brown, offers a very different scene, and the Peak District National Park and the Alton Towers theme park are both close by.

Stoke has an intense sporting culture, with two Football League clubs in Stoke City and Port Vale, and a strong local identity expressed in dialect, in the oatcake, a soft savoury pancake sold from specialist shops, and in a music scene that has produced internationally known performers.

The city stands on the West Coast Main Line, with trains to London in around ninety minutes and easy connections to Manchester and Birmingham, and the M6 motorway runs alongside. Staffordshire University has its main campus here, and Keele University lies just outside.

Rooted in craft and industry and now reinventing itself around design, logistics and heritage, Stoke-on-Trent is one of the most distinctive cities in England.
