Sulţānah

Sulţānah, also romanized as Sultanah or Al-Sultanah, is a city located in the Al-Madinah Region of western Saudi Arabia, situated in the Hejaz area of the Arabian Peninsula. The city lies in the broader urban-regional zone associated with the city of Medina, one of the holiest cities in Islam, and benefits from its proximity to this major religious center. As part of the wider Medina metropolitan area, Sulţānah has grown significantly in recent decades to accommodate the expanding population associated with religious tourism and economic development in the region.

The area of western Saudi Arabia where Sulţānah is located has been inhabited since ancient times and has been traversed by pilgrims and traders for millennia. The Hejaz region historically served as the core of the Islamic world following the revelation of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad in Mecca in the 7th century CE, and the entire region's identity and economy have been deeply shaped by Islam and the pilgrimage routes that connect the Holy Cities of Mecca and Medina.

The proximity to Medina, the City of the Prophet, is the defining feature of Sulţānah's geographic and cultural context. Medina is home to the Prophet's Mosque (Al-Masjid an-Nabawi), built by the Prophet Muhammad himself and one of the largest mosques in the world, which draws millions of pilgrims each year, second only to Mecca in Islamic religious significance. The enormous infrastructure built to accommodate Hajj and Umrah pilgrims — including highways, rail links, hotels, and service facilities — has transformed the wider Medina region, and Sulţānah has developed within this context of religious infrastructure and urban expansion.

The economy of Sulţānah and the surrounding region is significantly shaped by the service industries that cater to the millions of pilgrims who visit Medina annually. Hotels, restaurants, transport services, and retail establishments serving the religious tourism sector are important economic activities. The Saudi government's Vision 2030 initiative, which seeks to diversify the Saudi economy beyond oil dependence, has brought investment in tourism, culture, and non-petroleum economic sectors to the region.

The Hejaz region has a distinctive cultural character compared to the rest of Saudi Arabia, reflecting its long history as a cosmopolitan crossroads of pilgrimage and trade. The food, architecture, and social customs of the Hejaz carry influences from the many peoples who have passed through and settled here over centuries, creating a rich and layered local culture.

The Haramain High Speed Railway, completed in 2018, connects Mecca and Medina with stops at Jeddah and King Abdullah Economic City, dramatically reducing travel times between the Holy Cities and making the region more accessible for pilgrims and travelers. With its location in the spiritually significant Hejaz region and its role as part of the greater Medina urban area, Sulţānah occupies an important position in the religious and economic geography of Saudi Arabia.
