Sumaré is a city in the interior of the state of São Paulo in southeastern Brazil, lying about a hundred and twenty kilometres northwest of the state capital and immediately west of Campinas, of whose metropolitan region it forms part. The terrain is gently rolling, drained by small tributaries of the Piracicaba River, and the deep red soils of the district were once covered with coffee and sugar cane. The climate is tropical with a marked dry winter and a warm, wet summer.

Around two hundred and ninety thousand people live in Sumaré, and the city sits within one of the most economically dynamic corridors in Brazil, along the Anhanguera and Bandeirantes highways that carry traffic between São Paulo and the interior.

The settlement grew in the late nineteenth century around a railway station on the Companhia Paulista line, serving the coffee estates of the region, and it became an independent municipality in 1953. Waves of migration shaped its population, first Italian, Portuguese and Spanish immigrants working on the plantations, later families arriving from Minas Gerais and the northeast of Brazil to work in the factories, and this mixture is reflected in the food, music and religious festivals of the city.

Industry dominates the modern economy. Sumaré is home to a major automobile assembly plant built by Honda in the 1990s, which produces cars for the Brazilian and Latin American markets, and to factories making agricultural machinery, electrical equipment, packaging, chemicals, food and pharmaceuticals. Its position on the highways, close to Viracopos International Airport and to the port road to Santos, has also made it an important logistics and warehousing centre.

The city has an active civic life centred on the Praça Antônio Rodrigues Bueno, the mother church, the municipal theatre and cultural centre, and a calendar of festivals including carnival street bands, the June celebrations of Saint John with their bonfires and country dances, and agricultural shows. The Parque Ecológico and the Bosque das Cerejeiras, planted with Japanese cherry trees by the local community, provide green space, and the Serra do Japi and the reservoirs of the Piracicaba basin lie within easy reach for weekend trips.

Sumaré's greatest advantage is its neighbours. Campinas, one of the leading centres of research and technology in Latin America, is fifteen minutes away, and the university city offers museums, concert halls, hospitals and the enormous campus of the State University of Campinas. The historic towns of the sugar and coffee country, including Americana and Nova Odessa, are equally close.

Transport is provided by an extensive municipal bus network, by intercity coaches and by the highways, with Viracopos airport handling both passenger flights and one of the largest air cargo operations in the country.

Technical schools, private colleges and the federal technological institutes serve local students, while the universities of Campinas and Piracicaba are within commuting distance.

Sumaré is important as a manufacturing and logistics city in Brazil's industrial heartland, offering work, good connections and a comfortable pace of life close to a major research centre.
