Sumy
Sumy lies in north-eastern Ukraine on the Psel River, a tributary of the Dnipro, in a landscape of forest-steppe with oak woods, meadows and gentle hills. It is the capital of Sumy Oblast and has a population of around two hundred and fifty thousand. The Russian border runs only some forty kilometres to the north and east, a fact that has shaped much of the city's recent history.
Sumy was founded in 1655 by Cossacks and settlers moving east from the right bank of the Dnipro, part of the colonisation of the frontier region known as Sloboda Ukraine. Its coat of arms shows three hunting bags, and local tradition connects the name to bags found at the site by the first settlers. The fortified town guarded the frontier against Crimean Tatar raids, and by the eighteenth century it had become a market centre for grain and livestock.
Its modern character was formed by sugar. In the nineteenth century the Kharytonenko family built an empire of beet sugar refineries and used their fortune to transform Sumy, funding schools, hospitals, churches, a cadet corps and a theatre, and laying out the leafy boulevards that still define the centre. The family also assembled the art collection that became the core of the regional art museum, which holds an impressive body of Ukrainian, Russian and western European painting for a provincial city.
Landmarks include the Resurrection Cathedral of 1702, the oldest surviving building, the tall neoclassical bell tower of the Transfiguration Cathedral, the Trinity Cathedral with its fine interior, and the Altanka, a small ornamental gazebo that has become the city's emblem and appears on souvenirs everywhere. Parks along the Psel, sandy river beaches and the wooded Baranivka area provide the city's recreation.
Industry is dominated by heavy machine building. Sumy factories produce pumps, compressors and equipment for the oil, gas and chemical industries and have exported worldwide for decades, alongside chemical fertiliser production, electronics and food processing.
Education is a central part of local life. Sumy State University is one of the largest in northern Ukraine and has long attracted international students, particularly to its medical faculty, while the national agrarian university and the pedagogical university named after the educationalist Anton Makarenko add several thousand more students to a compact city.
Since the full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022 the Sumy region has been directly affected by fighting; the area around the city was occupied in the first weeks of the war and liberated in April 2022, and the city has continued to face shelling and drone attacks while hosting displaced families and maintaining its universities and industry.
Green, walkable and architecturally graceful, Sumy is a characteristic city of Ukraine's north-east, defined by its river, its sugar-era heritage and the resilience of its people.
