Suqian
Suqian is a prefecture-level city in northern Jiangsu Province in eastern China, situated on the Huai River plain between the major cities of Xuzhou to the northwest and Huai'an to the south. With a population of approximately 5.9 million people, Suqian is one of the younger prefectural cities in Jiangsu, having been elevated to prefecture-level status only in 1996, and is working to leverage its historical heritage and growing industrial base to develop a distinctive urban identity.
The area around Suqian has been inhabited for thousands of years and carries deep historical significance within Chinese history. Most notably, Suqian was the birthplace and homeland of Xiang Yu, the powerful military leader known as the Conqueror of the West who led forces against the Qin Dynasty and the subsequent Han Dynasty armies in the epic Chu-Han Contention, one of the most celebrated military contests in Chinese history. Xiang Yu's ultimate defeat by Liu Bang, the founder of the Han Dynasty, remains a powerful story in Chinese cultural memory. The Xiang Yu Memorial Park in Suqian commemorates his legacy with statuary, cultural exhibitions, and scenic grounds.
Suqian is also well known in contemporary China as the headquarters and birthplace of JD.com, one of China's largest e-commerce platforms and a global Fortune 500 company. The city takes considerable pride in this connection, and the Liu Qiangdong Museum, dedicated to the founder of JD.com who is a native of Suqian, tells the story of his rise from humble rural origins to global business leadership.
The Luoma Lake Scenic Area is Suqian's primary natural attraction, offering a large freshwater lake surrounded by wetlands, lotus fields, and recreational infrastructure. The lake and its associated ecosystem support fishing and aquaculture activities that have long been part of the regional economy. The ancient town of Shuyang, a county under Suqian's jurisdiction, preserves traditional architecture and folk customs of the northern Jiangsu region.
Suqian's economy is growing in sectors including food processing, chemical manufacturing, construction materials, and e-commerce logistics. The city has invested in new industrial parks and special economic zones to attract investment and diversify its economic base beyond agriculture.
Transportation infrastructure includes expressways connecting Suqian to Xuzhou, Nanjing, and other Jiangsu cities, and railway services providing access to the national rail network.
Suqian University and several vocational colleges serve the educational needs of the local population, supporting workforce development in the city's growing industrial and commercial sectors.
Suqian's historical depth, association with one of China's most celebrated historical dramas, connection to modern e-commerce success, and natural lakeside landscapes make it a city of growing interest and ambition within the prosperous Yangtze River Delta economic region.
