Suva
Suva is the capital and largest city of Fiji, situated on the southeastern coast of Viti Levu, the main island of the Fijian archipelago, at the tip of a broad peninsula extending into Suva Harbour. As the administrative, commercial, and cultural capital of Fiji, Suva is the political and economic hub of the nation and the largest city in the Pacific Islands outside of Australia and New Zealand. Its role as the seat of government and major regional organizations makes it one of the most important cities in the South Pacific.
With a population of approximately 90,000 in the city proper and around 330,000 in the greater urban area, Suva is a genuinely cosmopolitan city shaped by the meeting of multiple cultures including indigenous Fijian, Indo-Fijian, other Pacific Islander, Chinese, European, and many other communities. The University of the South Pacific, which serves students from 12 Pacific Island nations, has its main campus in Suva and contributes significantly to the city's role as a regional educational and intellectual hub.
The history of Suva as a capital city is relatively recent. The British colonial administration moved the capital of Fiji from Levuka on the island of Ovalau to Suva in 1882 to take advantage of the superior harbor and the more central location on the main island. Fiji had been ceded to Britain by the paramount chief Ratu Seru Epenisa Cakobau in 1874, and the colonial period brought the infrastructure that established Suva as the region's most important city. Fiji gained independence in 1970, and Suva has continued to develop as the administrative and economic center of the now fully independent nation.
The Fiji Museum, located in the colonial-era Thurston Gardens, is one of the finest museums in the Pacific, presenting outstanding collections of Fijian cultural artifacts, natural history specimens, and historical materials including the rudder of HMS Bounty, the famous ship associated with the mutiny of 1789. The museum provides an excellent introduction to Fijian culture, history, and the extraordinary diversity of Pacific Island civilizations. The Thurston Gardens surrounding the museum are a pleasant botanical garden with a collection of tropical plants.
Suva's city center reflects its British colonial heritage in the Government Buildings, the Grand Pacific Hotel, and various colonial-era structures along Victoria Parade. The Suva Municipal Market is one of the liveliest and most colorful markets in the South Pacific, selling fresh tropical produce, kava roots, traditional crafts, and local food. The city's nightlife and restaurant scene, concentrated in areas like Cumming Street and along the waterfront, reflect the multicultural character of the population.
The University of the South Pacific campus is a significant landmark and employer, and various regional organizations including the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat have their headquarters in Suva, reinforcing the city's role as the political capital of the Pacific Islands region. The surrounding forests and hills offer hiking opportunities with views over the harbor, and nearby coastal areas provide snorkeling and diving experiences.
Suva is accessible by air through Nausori Airport located about 23 kilometers from the city center, with connections to Pacific destinations and domestic Fijian airports. Suva's combination of regional political importance, cultural diversity, excellent museum collections, vibrant market life, and colonial heritage make it a fascinating and substantial city that reveals a side of Fiji quite different from the resort paradise of the western islands.
