Tabriz
Tabriz is the capital of East Azerbaijan Province in northwestern Iran, located in a fertile valley in the foothills of the volcanic Mount Sahand at an elevation of approximately 1,350 meters above sea level. With a population of approximately 1.8 million people, it is one of Iran's largest cities and has historically served as one of the most important cultural, commercial, and political centers in the Middle East and Central Asia.
Tabriz has one of the longest and most complex histories of any city in Iran. It served as the capital of the Ilkhanate Mongol Empire in the 13th and 14th centuries, during which it became one of the largest and most cosmopolitan cities in the world, a trading hub connecting East Asian, Central Asian, and European commercial routes along the Silk Road. Marco Polo described the city as great and noble. The city subsequently served as the capital of the Safavid Persian Empire in the early 16th century before political instability led to the capital's transfer southward.
The Tabriz Historic Bazaar Complex is the city's most celebrated monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the oldest and largest covered bazaars in the world, the Tabriz Bazaar has been a center of commerce and culture for over a millennium and remains an active marketplace today where carpets, spices, metalwork, dried fruits, and traditional crafts are sold amid a labyrinthine system of arched corridors, caravanserais, and workshops. The Blue Mosque, or Kaboud Mosque, built in 1465 and partially restored after a devastating earthquake, features extraordinary tilework that once covered the entire interior in a symphony of blue ceramic decoration.
Tabriz is renowned throughout the world for the production of Tabriz carpets, hand-knotted rugs of exceptional quality, intricate design, and extraordinary craftsmanship that have been exported to royal courts and wealthy collectors across the world for centuries. The carpet-making tradition remains very much alive and is one of the city's primary cultural exports.
The city has a vibrant university community led by the University of Tabriz, one of Iran's most prestigious state universities, founded in 1947. Tabriz Medical Sciences University and several other institutions make the city an important center of higher education in northwestern Iran.
Transportation links include Tabriz International Airport, highways connecting the city to Tehran, Ankara, and Baku, and a railway network linking Tabriz to the Iranian national rail system.
Tabriz's extraordinary historical depth, world-class bazaar, masterpiece mosque architecture, legendary carpet tradition, and commanding mountain setting make it one of the most rewarding and fascinating cities in Iran for visitors willing to venture beyond the more frequently visited Tehran and Isfahan.
