Tabuk
Tabuk is a major city and the capital of the Tabuk Region, located in the northwestern corner of Saudi Arabia near the borders with Jordan and Egypt across the Gulf of Aqaba. With a population of approximately 600,000, Tabuk is the largest city in northwestern Saudi Arabia and serves as the administrative, military, and commercial hub of a vast region that encompasses some of the Arabian Peninsula's most spectacular natural landscapes, including the red sandstone desert of Hejaz, the dramatic Midian Mountains, and the Gulf of Aqaba coastline.
The Tabuk area has a history stretching back to ancient times, lying on the route of the Hejaz Railway and the ancient Arabian trade and pilgrimage routes. The city is mentioned in Islamic history — the Prophet Muhammad led a military expedition to Tabuk in 630 CE, known as the Expedition of Tabuk, one of the last and largest military campaigns of the early Islamic era. Tabuk Castle, a historic Ottoman fortification dating to the 16th century and used as a resting point by pilgrims on the Hajj route, has been restored and serves as a museum of the region's history.
Tabuk Region contains some of Saudi Arabia's most remarkable natural and historical sites. The ancient Nabataean city of Hegra (Al-Hijr or Mada'in Saleh) — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is Saudi Arabia's first World Heritage Site, featuring spectacular carved rock tombs hewn from rose-red sandstone cliffs, comparable in grandeur to Petra in Jordan and carved by the same Nabataean civilization. The site is one of the most extraordinary archaeological destinations in the Arab world and has been opened to international tourism as part of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 tourism development initiative.
Tabuk Region also contains the Hisma Desert, a landscape of striking red-and-black sandstone buttes, arches, and formations that have been compared to the American West and which are being developed as the NEOM megaproject — a futuristic planned city and economic development zone spanning northwestern Saudi Arabia and parts of Jordan and Egypt. Tabuk is the nearest major city to the NEOM construction site and has been significantly transformed by the infrastructure investment associated with this massive project.
Tabuk Regional Airport connects the city to Riyadh, Jeddah, and other Saudi destinations, with expanding capacity to support tourism and the NEOM project. Military installations remain significant in Tabuk given the region's strategic position near borders and the Gulf of Aqaba.
Tabuk's combination of deep Islamic historical significance, extraordinary Nabataean archaeological heritage, dramatic desert landscapes, and its pivotal role as the gateway to Vision 2030's most ambitious projects make it one of Saudi Arabia's most rapidly transforming and strategically important cities.
