Taganrog
Taganrog stands on a cape jutting into the Sea of Azov in the Rostov region of southern Russia, close to the border with Ukraine and about seventy kilometres west of Rostov-on-Don. The town occupies a flat headland above low clay cliffs, with the shallow, brackish waters of Taganrog Bay on three sides. Summers are hot and dry, winters short and windy, and the sea often freezes for a few weeks each year. Steppe grassland stretches inland behind the port.
Around two hundred and fifty thousand people live here. Taganrog is a significant industrial city, with a large metallurgical plant producing steel pipe, a boiler works, food and leather industries and, most famously, the Beriev design bureau, which has built seaplanes and amphibious aircraft since the 1930s. The commercial port handles grain, coal and metals, and fishing remains part of local life.
Peter the Great founded the town in 1698 as the first Russian naval base built on open sea, intended to secure access to the Black Sea after the capture of the Turkish fortress at Azov. The harbour was constructed with great effort and then dismantled and rebuilt several times as wars with the Ottoman Empire shifted the frontier. From the early nineteenth century Taganrog prospered as a grain-exporting port with a cosmopolitan merchant community of Greeks, Italians and Armenians whose villas and churches still line the older streets. Emperor Alexander I died here in 1825 in a modest house that became a place of pilgrimage. The city was occupied by German forces from 1941 to 1943 and suffered heavily.
Taganrog is best known as the birthplace of Anton Chekhov, and his memory shapes the city. Visitors can see the tiny cottage where he was born, the grocery shop his father kept, the classical school he attended, the library he helped to stock and a fine statue overlooking the main street. The drama theatre carries his name and stages his plays. The actress Faina Ranevskaya, one of the most quoted figures in Soviet cinema, also came from Taganrog, and small witty sculptures around town celebrate literary characters and local heroes.
The Stone Staircase, a grand flight of steps built in 1823 by a Greek merchant, descends from the cliff-top boulevard to the seafront and is the symbol of the city. The art museum holds works by leading Russian painters, and the local history museum occupies a splendid palace. Beaches, fishing piers and shaded promenades give summers a resort atmosphere, and the archaeological site of the ancient Greek settlement of Tanais lies nearby.
Trains and frequent buses connect Taganrog with Rostov-on-Don and beyond, and the nearest airport serves the wider region. Several institutes, including a well-regarded engineering and radio technology school now part of the Southern Federal University, along with a pedagogical institute, give the city a student presence.
Taganrog is remembered as a seaside port with imperial origins and as the cradle of one of the greatest writers in world literature.
