Talcahuano
Talcahuano occupies a rocky peninsula on the Pacific coast of central southern Chile, in the Biobio region, enclosing the sheltered bay of Concepcion. It forms part of the Greater Concepcion conurbation, the second largest urban area in the country, and lies about five hundred kilometres south of Santiago. Hills rise steeply behind the port, the Tumbes peninsula shelters the harbour from the open ocean, and the island of Quiriquina stands at the mouth of the bay. The climate is temperate and often grey, with wet winters and cool sea fog.
Around one hundred and sixty thousand people live in the commune. Talcahuano is above all a port and industrial city, and its economy is unusually concentrated. It is the principal naval base of Chile, home to the fleet and to the naval dockyard, and it handles the largest fish landings in the country, with canneries and fishmeal plants along the waterfront. The Huachipato steelworks, the only integrated steel plant in Chile, has operated here since the 1950s, and a petroleum refinery, shipyards and container terminals complete a heavily industrial landscape.
The Spanish recognised the value of the bay early, and the settlement was formally established in 1764 as the port of the city of Concepcion, taking its name from a local Mapuche leader. It became strategically vital during the wars of independence and again during the war between Chile, Peru and Bolivia in the late nineteenth century, after which the naval base was greatly expanded. The twentieth century brought steel, fishing fleets and rapid population growth. In February 2010 an enormous earthquake off the coast and the tsunami that followed struck Talcahuano with great force, flooding the port, wrecking boats and damaging thousands of homes, and reconstruction shaped the following decade.
The best known attraction is the ironclad Huascar, a warship captured from Peru in 1879 and preserved in the naval base as a floating museum, meticulously maintained and open to visitors, one of the very few surviving vessels of its era anywhere in the world. The naval and maritime museums, the fish market with its seafood restaurants and sea lions waiting beside the quays, and the viewpoints on the hills over the bay are the other highlights. The Tumbes peninsula offers coastal walks and beaches, and Quiriquina Island, used as a naval training station, has a notable history and rich birdlife.
Local culture is rooted in maritime life, with seafood such as congrio, machas and centolla at its heart, and the port festivals, brass bands and football rivalry of the Biobio give the city a robust identity. Universities in neighbouring Concepcion, among the most respected in Chile, serve students from Talcahuano, while local technical institutes train workers for the shipyards, fisheries and steel industry. The Biotren suburban railway, motorways and an airport at Carriel Sur, which lies within the commune, provide transport links.
Talcahuano is important as the main naval and fishing port of Chile and as a cornerstone of the industrial south of the country.
