Current Time in Tambov, Russia

Tambov stands on the banks of the Tsna River in the black earth belt of European Russia, roughly four hundred and sixty kilometres southeast of Moscow. It is the administrative centre of Tambov Oblast, a region of gently rolling farmland, oak groves and slow rivers that forms part of the transition between the forest zone and the open steppe. The climate is continental, with snowy winters, warm summers and a long agricultural growing season.

Around two hundred and seventy five thousand people live in the city. Its importance is primarily regional and agricultural, for the surrounding chernozem soil is among the most fertile in the world and Tambov has long been a centre for grain, sugar beet, sunflowers and food processing. Engineering works produce agricultural machinery, chemicals and electrical equipment.

The city was founded in 1636 as a wooden fortress on the southern frontier of the Russian state, part of a defensive line built to protect settled territory from raids launched from the steppe. Once the frontier moved further south the fortress town became a provincial capital and a market for the rich countryside around it. The poet and statesman Gavrila Derzhavin served as governor here in the 1780s and did much to establish schools, a theatre and the first printing press in the province. In the early twentieth century the region was the scene of a large peasant uprising during the Russian Civil War, an episode that still colours local historical memory.

The centre of Tambov retains a pleasant nineteenth century character, with low merchant houses, tree lined boulevards and a long embankment along the Tsna that has been rebuilt as a promenade with fountains and cycle paths. The Cathedral of the Transfiguration, founded in the seventeenth century, is the oldest church in the city, while the Kazan Monastery with its tall belfry and the Ascension Convent are important religious sites. The Aseyev Mansion, an elegant early twentieth century residence built for a local industrialist and now restored as a museum, is the finest secular building in the region.

Tambov has a strong musical identity through its association with Sergei Rachmaninov, whose family estate at Ivanovka lies in the oblast and is preserved as a museum. The city hosts an international Rachmaninov festival, and its music institute carries the composer's name. There are also a regional local lore museum, a picture gallery and a well regarded drama theatre.

Trolleybuses and buses provide public transport, and the railway station is a stop on lines running south from Moscow towards Saratov and the Caucasus. The Donskoye airport offers limited flights, while road connections link the city to Voronezh, Lipetsk and Penza.

Higher education is represented by Derzhavin Tambov State University, the Tambov State Technical University and a well known agricultural university, all of which give the city a substantial student population.

Tambov appeals to visitors as a calm and green provincial capital where Russian rural traditions, classical music and nineteenth century architecture come together.
