Current Time in Tampico, Mexico

Tampico lies on the Gulf coast of eastern Mexico, in the southern corner of Tamaulipas state, on the north bank of the Pánuco River a few kilometres before it reaches the sea. Lagoons, marshes and mangroves surround the city, and the flat, humid landscape of the Huasteca region stretches inland. Together with Ciudad Madero and Altamira it forms a conurbation of close to a million people, of whom around three hundred thousand live in Tampico itself.

The city's importance is maritime and industrial. Its port is one of the busiest on the Mexican Gulf coast, and the refinery and petrochemical complex on the neighbouring shore have made the area a cornerstone of the national energy industry for a century. Fishing, shipping services and commerce with the agricultural interior complete the economy.

A Spanish settlement was founded near here in the sixteenth century among the Huastec people, but repeated raids by pirates forced its abandonment, and the modern city dates from a refounding in 1823. It quickly became Mexico's main Gulf port after Veracruz, and in 1829 a Spanish expedition attempting to reconquer the country was defeated on its outskirts. The transformation came in the early twentieth century, when enormous oil deposits were discovered in the surrounding Huasteca. Tampico boomed spectacularly, filling with British and American companies, and its wealth was reflected in the elegant buildings of the centre, many with cast-iron balconies and shuttered windows that give the old quarter a distinct resemblance to New Orleans.

The historic centre, restored in recent years, is the main attraction, centred on the Plaza de Armas with its cathedral and the tree-shaded Plaza de la Libertad surrounded by porticoed buildings. The Laguna del Carpintero, a lagoon set right in the city, has a park, a suspended walkway through the trees and resident crocodiles that visitors watch from safe distance. Playa Miramar, a long, clean beach on the neighbouring shoreline, draws crowds throughout the warm months, and the Huastec Culture Museum explains the pre-Hispanic civilisation of the region, whose great site of Tamtoc lies inland.

Culturally the city belongs to the Huasteca, home of the huapango, a fast violin and guitar music accompanied by falsetto singing and rhythmic dancing on wooden platforms, performed at festivals throughout the region. Carnival is celebrated with enthusiasm, and the local food is a highlight, from crab in every form and the famous tortas de la barda to the beef dish carne asada a la tampiqueña, invented here and now served across Mexico.

Transport connections include an international airport, a busy road network linking the city to Monterrey, Mexico City and Veracruz, and the port itself. The Autonomous University of Tamaulipas has a large campus here, along with technological institutes and private universities.

Tampico combines faded oil-boom grandeur, a restored historic centre, warm beaches and one of Mexico's most distinctive regional cultures, and it remains an appealing and underrated stop on the Gulf coast.
