Tbilisi

Tbilisi is the capital and largest city of Georgia, a country located at the crossroads of Europe and Asia in the South Caucasus region. Situated in a valley along the Kura River, surrounded by forested hills and overlooked by the ancient Narikala fortress, Tbilisi has a population of approximately 1.2 million people and serves as the political, economic, and cultural heart of the country. With a history of nearly 1,500 years and a setting of extraordinary natural and architectural beauty, Tbilisi is one of the most captivating and distinctive cities in the entire Caucasus region.

According to Georgian legend, Tbilisi was founded in the 5th century CE by the Iberian king Vakhtang Gorgasali, who, while hunting, discovered warm sulfurous springs in the valley and decided to establish a city there. The name Tbilisi derives from the Georgian word for warm, referring to these natural hot springs that bubble up throughout the old town and which still feed traditional bathhouses in the Abanotubani district. The city officially replaced the older capital Mtskheta and became the capital of the united Georgian kingdom.

Old Tbilisi, known as Dzveli Kalaki, is a remarkable architectural ensemble that descends from the Narikala fortress along steep hillside lanes to the Kura River. The neighborhood is characterized by its distinctive vernacular architecture: wooden houses with intricately carved balconies that overhang the narrow winding streets, ancient stone churches, the colorful Abanotubani sulfur bathhouses with their characteristic domed roofs, Persian caravanserais, and the reconstructed Metekhi Church on a dramatic cliff above the river. This atmospheric old quarter has been largely preserved and is the cultural heart of the city.

The Rustaveli Avenue, Tbilisi's main boulevard, is lined with grand 19th-century neoclassical and Art Nouveau buildings housing theatres, museums, hotels, and embassies. The Georgian National Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts hold important collections of Georgian antiquities and art. The Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Rustaveli National Theatre, and numerous smaller venues offer a rich performing arts scene. Tbilisi has also developed a dynamic contemporary arts and nightlife scene, with the city's electronic music culture in particular having gained international recognition.

Georgian cuisine and wine culture are central to Tbilisi's identity and appeal. Georgia is believed to be one of the world's oldest wine-producing regions, with winemaking traditions extending back 8,000 years, and Tbilisi's restaurants and wine bars offer an extraordinary range of Georgian wines made using traditional qvevri clay vessel fermentation methods. Khinkali (dumplings), khachapuri (cheese-filled bread), and numerous grilled and stewed meat dishes represent a rich and distinctive culinary tradition.

Tbilisi State University, the Georgian Technical University, and several other institutions constitute the city's academic community. Georgia has developed a significant tourism sector in recent years, with Tbilisi emerging as one of the most popular destinations for travelers from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia seeking a destination that combines ancient history, natural beauty, excellent food and wine, and warm hospitality.

Tbilisi's extraordinary layered history, stunning architectural character, culinary riches, and position at the meeting point of European and Asian cultures make it one of the world's most compelling and underappreciated capital cities.
