Tegal is a coastal city on the northern shore of Central Java, facing the Java Sea roughly halfway between Jakarta and Semarang. It sits on a flat alluvial plain where the Gung River reaches the coast, with the volcanic cone of Mount Slamet rising inland to the south. The setting is hot and humid throughout the year, and the city has long looked outward to the sea and to the busy trunk road that runs along the north coast of Java.

About three hundred thousand people live within the city, and the surrounding regency of the same name pushes the wider population well beyond a million. Tegal is an important regional trading and industrial centre, best known across Indonesia for its metalworking workshops. Thousands of small foundries and machine shops turn out engine parts, pumps, hand tools and ship fittings, an industry so dense that Indonesians sometimes call the city a miniature version of Japan. Fishing, shipbuilding and food processing round out the local economy.

The area appears in Javanese records from the sixteenth century, when it lay within the sphere of the Islamic sultanates of the north coast. Its name is thought to derive from a word for fertile field. Under Dutch rule Tegal became a sugar port and administrative town, gaining a railway station, a harbour and rows of colonial offices and villas, some of which still stand. The city played a part in the revolution that followed the Second World War and grew steadily afterwards as industry and road traffic expanded.

Visitors usually begin at the central square, the alun-alun, which is overlooked by the Grand Mosque and by handsome buildings from the colonial period, including the old town hall and the railway station. The waterfront at Pantai Alam Indah offers sea breezes, food stalls and a maritime monument, while the harbour district is lively with fishing boats. Within easy reach in the hills are the hot springs of Guci on the slopes of Mount Slamet and the tea gardens and waterfalls of the upland districts.

Tegal has a strong local identity built around its distinctive dialect of Javanese, which sounds blunt and cheerful to other Javanese ears, and around its food. Warung Tegal, the modest and inexpensive eating houses run by people from this region, have spread to every corner of Jakarta and other big cities, making the name familiar nationwide. Locals drink teh poci, strong tea served in a small clay pot with lumps of rock sugar, and enjoy dishes such as sate blengong, kupat glabed and grilled seafood.

The city lies on the main railway and the north coast highway, so trains and buses to Jakarta, Semarang and Surabaya are frequent, and a small port handles coastal shipping. Several universities and polytechnics, including Pancasakti University, serve students from across the region.
