The Hague
The Hague, known in Dutch as Den Haag, is the seat of the Dutch government and parliament, the diplomatic capital of the Netherlands, and the home of the Dutch royal family, even though Amsterdam holds the formal title of national capital. Located in the western Netherlands in the province of South Holland, The Hague lies close to the North Sea coast and is connected to the beach resort of Scheveningen and the university town of Delft. With a population of approximately 550,000 people, it is the third largest city in the Netherlands and one of the most internationally significant cities in Europe.
The Hague has been the center of Dutch government since the thirteenth century, when Count Floris IV built a hunting lodge here, around which the city gradually grew. The Binnenhof — the Inner Court — is a medieval castle complex at the heart of the city that houses the Dutch parliament and is one of the oldest parliament buildings in the world still in use. The adjacent Hofvijver pond and the Gothic Hall (Ridderzaal) create one of the most picturesque political settings in Europe and are popular landmarks for visitors.
The city's global reputation rests largely on its role as the world's center for international law and justice. The International Court of Justice, the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, is headquartered here at the Peace Palace — a magnificent early twentieth-century building donated by Andrew Carnegie. The International Criminal Court, the Permanent Court of Arbitration, and numerous other international organizations and tribunals are also based in The Hague. This concentration of legal institutions has earned the city the nickname "the world's legal capital."
The Hague has an exceptional cultural life anchored by world-class museums. The Mauritshuis is one of the finest art museums in the world, housing Dutch Golden Age masterpieces including Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring and Rembrandt's The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp. The Gemeentemuseum (now renamed the Kunstmuseum) holds the world's largest collection of paintings by Piet Mondrian and a superb collection of modern and applied art. The Panorama Mesdag features a breathtaking nineteenth-century 360-degree panoramic painting of the North Sea coast.
The nearby Scheveningen beach and pier attract millions of visitors each summer, offering swimming, seafood restaurants, and a lively promenade. The city's international character is reflected in its diverse neighborhoods, multilingual population, and extensive expatriate community supported by the presence of international institutions.
The Hague occupies a unique position in the world — as both a quintessentially Dutch city and a genuinely global center of diplomacy and law. Its combination of historic architecture, world-class art, international prestige, and seaside accessibility makes it one of Europe's most rewarding and underappreciated capitals.
