Current Time in Timişoara, Romania

Timişoara lies in the far west of Romania, in the historic region of Banat, on the flat and fertile plain that continues into Hungary and Serbia. The Bega Canal, an engineering work begun in the eighteenth century, winds through the city and gives it a network of green riverside promenades. The setting is low and open, the climate continental with warm summers, and the old centre is remarkably compact, built around three large squares within a short walk of one another.

The city has a population of around three hundred thousand and is the largest in western Romania. Its importance is economic and cultural in equal measure. Timişoara is a major centre for the automotive, electronics and software industries, attracting international investment and a young workforce, and in 2023 it served as a European Capital of Culture.

A fortress existed here in the Middle Ages, and King Charles Robert of Hungary made it his royal seat for a time in the fourteenth century. The Ottomans captured the city in 1552 and held it for more than one hundred and sixty years, until Prince Eugene of Savoy took it in 1716 for the Habsburgs, who drained the marshes, built a star-shaped fortress and settled German, Serbian, Hungarian, Romanian, Jewish, Bulgarian and Italian colonists. That deliberate diversity has defined the city ever since. Timişoara acquired a reputation for firsts: horse-drawn trams in 1869, and in 1884 it became the first city in Europe to light its public streets with electricity.

Its most consequential moment came in December 1989, when protests in defence of the Hungarian pastor László Tőkés grew into a mass demonstration, and Timişoara declared itself the first free city in Romania. The revolution that toppled the communist regime began here, and memorials and a dedicated museum tell the story.

Union Square is a baroque masterpiece, framed by the Roman Catholic Dome, the Serbian Orthodox cathedral and pastel palaces. Victory Square, a long pedestrian esplanade, runs from the National Theatre and Opera House to the soaring Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral with its coloured tiled roof. The fourteenth-century Huniade Castle houses the Banat Museum, and the restored Fabric and Iosefin quarters are full of secession-style architecture. Boat trips run on the Bega, and the city has more parks than any other in Romania.

Cultural life includes theatres performing in Romanian, Hungarian and German, a respected philharmonic orchestra, an art museum and busy festivals of jazz, film and street art. Cafés fill the squares from spring to autumn, and the food combines Romanian, Hungarian, Serbian and Swabian traditions.

Traian Vuia International Airport, named after a local aviation pioneer, offers flights across Europe, and motorways and railways lead to Budapest, Belgrade and Bucharest. Trams have run since the nineteenth century. The Politehnica University, the West University and the Victor Babeș University of Medicine give the city tens of thousands of students.

Timişoara is elegant, multilingual and self-confident, a Central European city that helped change the course of Romanian history.
