Tirupati

Tirupati lies in the southern part of the state of Andhra Pradesh in India, at the foot of the Seshachalam range, a spur of the Eastern Ghats covered in dry deciduous forest and famous for its red sandalwood. The town spreads across the plain below wooded hills, with the sacred summit of Tirumala rising directly above it, and the border with Tamil Nadu and the city of Chennai are only a few hours away. The climate is hot for much of the year, cooled a little on the hills, with rain arriving from both the southwest and the northeast monsoons.

The urban area holds well over half a million people, but the resident population tells only part of the story, because Tirupati receives tens of millions of pilgrims every year. The Venkateswara temple at Tirumala is among the most visited religious sites on earth and by most accounts the wealthiest, sustained by an extraordinary flow of offerings that funds hospitals, colleges, free meals and charitable trusts across the region.

Worship here is ancient. Inscriptions record royal donations from the Pallava, Chola and Pandya periods, and the temple reached its full magnificence under the Vijayanagara emperors in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, when Krishnadevaraya lavished gold and jewels on the shrine. The saint poet Annamacharya composed thousands of songs in its praise. Below the hill, the town that grew to serve pilgrims developed its own temples, tanks and markets, and in modern times it has expanded into a substantial regional centre.

Pilgrims climb the hill on foot by stone stairways or ride the ghat roads to reach the dark inner sanctuary, where the image of Lord Venkateswara stands adorned with gold and flowers. Many shave their heads as an offering, and almost everyone leaves with the celebrated Tirupati laddu, a sweet made in the temple kitchens and protected by its own geographical indication. In the town itself the Govindaraja Swamy temple, the Kapila Theertham waterfall shrine and the Padmavathi temple at Tiruchanur draw steady crowds, while Chandragiri Fort, the Talakona falls and the Sri Venkateswara National Park with its zoo and deer park lie within easy reach.

Alongside devotion there is a lively civic culture, with temple museums, classical music and dance performances, Telugu literature and a busy calendar of festivals, of which the nine day Brahmotsavam in autumn is the grandest. The economy revolves around pilgrimage, but electronics manufacturing and food processing have grown in recent years.

Tirupati is exceptionally well connected, with an international airport at Renigunta, a major railway junction and constant bus services. It has also become an education hub, home to a Sanskrit university, Sri Venkateswara University, a medical institute and campuses of the Indian Institute of Technology and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research.

Tirupati is important as one of the great pilgrimage cities of the world and a growing centre of learning in southern India.
