Toledo
Toledo stands in north-western Ohio, on the Maumee River where it flows into the western end of Lake Erie. The surrounding country is flat and fertile, the drained bed of the vast wetland once known as the Great Black Swamp, and the city occupies a strategic position on the routes between the industrial centres of the Midwest and the ports of the Great Lakes. Its harbour is one of the busiest on the lakes, handling coal, grain, iron ore and petroleum products.
Roughly two hundred and seventy thousand people live in the city, with about six hundred thousand in the metropolitan area. Toledo is known worldwide as the Glass City, a nickname earned when abundant natural gas, sand and enterprising manufacturers made it the centre of American glass production. Companies founded here pioneered automatic bottle making, safety glass, fibreglass and modern windows, and glass research remains important. Automobile assembly is the other pillar of the economy, with a large plant that has built Jeep vehicles for generations, alongside health care, solar energy technology and agriculture.
The site was long inhabited by Indigenous peoples, and the region saw fierce fighting during the frontier wars of the 1790s and the War of 1812. The settlement that became Toledo was laid out in the 1830s and named, somewhat romantically, after the Spanish city. Almost immediately it was at the centre of the so-called Toledo War, a bloodless but tense boundary dispute between Ohio and the Michigan Territory that Congress resolved in Ohio's favour. The Miami and Erie Canal, then the railways, then the glass and car industries drove rapid growth, drawing German, Irish, Polish, Hungarian, Lebanese and later African American and Latino communities whose neighbourhoods still shape the city.
The Toledo Museum of Art is the outstanding attraction, an institution of national standing with a free-entry collection ranging from ancient Egypt to modern painting, housed in a neoclassical building and complemented by the Glass Pavilion, an elegant structure of curved glass walls holding one of the world's finest glass collections and working hot shops. The Toledo Zoo is consistently ranked among the best in the country, and the Imagination Station science centre entertains families. Baseball fans fill Fifth Third Field to watch the Mud Hens, a minor league team made famous by a character in a long-running television comedy. Metroparks along the Maumee River offer trails, rapids and restored prairie, and the marshes of the lake shore are internationally known for spring warbler migration.
Toledo has a solid festival calendar, a symphony orchestra, historic theatres, a lively brewery scene and food traditions ranging from Hungarian pastries and Polish sausage to Middle Eastern cuisine.
Interstate highways meet here, an airport serves the region, and buses and Amtrak trains provide connections to Chicago, Detroit and Cleveland. The University of Toledo, a large public institution with a medical college, and several other colleges serve the area.
Toledo is important as a Great Lakes port, a manufacturing centre and the home of American glassmaking.
