Tonghua is a prefecture-level city located in the southeastern part of Jilin Province in northeastern China. Situated near the borders with North Korea and close to the Changbai Mountain range, the city lies in a mountainous, forested region of the greater Manchurian plateau. With a total population of approximately 2.2 million people across its administrative area, Tonghua serves as an important regional hub for the southeastern Jilin region, known for its ginseng cultivation, grape wine production, and strategic proximity to the Korean Peninsula.

Ginseng is another defining product of the Tonghua region. Jilin Province is China's most important producer of ginseng, and the Tonghua area contributes significantly to this output. The cool, moist climate and rich forest soils create excellent conditions for ginseng cultivation. Ginseng products including whole roots, extracts, and health tonics are sold in markets throughout the city and are exported across China and internationally. The ginseng trade is a major economic activity with deep roots in the traditional culture and medicine of the region.

The natural environment around Tonghua is spectacular. The Changbai Mountain range, accessible from Tonghua, is one of China's most iconic natural landscapes, culminating in the Heaven Lake, a pristine crater lake at the summit of the mountain that straddles the border with North Korea. The surrounding forests, hot springs, and waterfalls attract tourists, hikers, and nature lovers. The winter sports industry has also developed in the region, with ski resorts in the mountains catering to growing Chinese demand for winter recreation.

Tonghua's economy is also supported by steel manufacturing, chemical production, and pharmaceutical industries. The city is connected by rail to major Jilin cities and to Shenyang in neighboring Liaoning Province.
