Torreón
Torreón is a major city located in the southeastern corner of the state of Coahuila in northern Mexico, forming part of the Laguna metropolitan area alongside Gómez Palacio and Ciudad Lerdo in neighboring Durango. With a population exceeding 700,000 in the city proper and approximately 1.5 million in the metropolitan area, Torreón is one of Mexico's largest and most economically significant cities. Its location in the Comarca Lagunera region — a fertile agricultural zone fed by the Nazas and Aguanaval rivers — has been central to its development.
Torreón was officially founded in 1907, making it one of Mexico's youngest major cities. It grew rapidly as a railway junction and agricultural processing hub during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. During the Mexican Revolution, the city was the site of fierce battles, and its Chinese community suffered a devastating massacre in 1911. Despite these hardships, Torreón rebuilt itself and continued to expand as an industrial and commercial center throughout the 20th century.
The city is known as a major center for cotton production and processing, earning the Comarca Lagunera the title of "the cotton region of Mexico." Today the economy has diversified significantly, encompassing food and beverage processing, manufacturing, metallurgy, and a growing services sector. The local wine and cheese industries, rooted in the broader La Laguna region, have also gained national recognition.
Torreón has developed a vibrant urban culture, with a range of museums, cultural centers, and entertainment options. The Museo Arocena is one of the finest regional museums in northern Mexico, housing art collections and historical exhibitions. The Paseo Morelos promenade and the city's main plaza are popular gathering spots. The city has a passionate sporting culture, with basketball particularly popular — the Toros de la Laguna and the Santos Laguna soccer club both command loyal followings.
Transportation in Torreón is well developed, with a modern bus rapid transit system (Metrobús Laguna) connecting the metropolitan area. The Francisco Sarabia International Airport provides air connections to major Mexican cities and some international destinations. Several universities, including the Iberoamerican University and the Autonomous University of Coahuila, serve the region's educational needs.
Torreón's dynamic economy, its position as the gateway to northern Mexico's industrial corridor, and its growing cultural scene make it an important and increasingly livable city. Its story of rapid growth and resilience continues to shape its identity as one of the north's most energetic urban centers.
