Trento
Trento is the capital of the autonomous province of Trentino in northeastern Italy, situated in the Adige Valley between the Dolomites and the Brenta Dolomites at an elevation of approximately 194 meters. With a population of approximately 118,000, it serves as the administrative and cultural center of the Trentino region and is one of the most prosperous cities in Italy. Trento is known for its remarkably well-preserved Renaissance historic center, for hosting one of the most important councils in the history of the Catholic Church, and for its exceptional quality of life, which has placed it at or near the top of Italian quality-of-life rankings for many consecutive years.
Trento's greatest moment in world history came between 1545 and 1563, when it hosted the Council of Trent — the nineteenth Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church and one of the most consequential ecclesiastical assemblies of the modern era. Convened in response to the Protestant Reformation, the council over its three sessions clarified Catholic doctrine on questions of scripture, tradition, original sin, justification, and the sacraments; reformed ecclesiastical practice and education; and launched what is known as the Counter-Reformation. The decisions made in Trento shaped the character of Roman Catholicism for the next four centuries and remain authoritative in Catholic teaching to the present day. The cathedral in which the council met — the Cathedral of San Vigilio — and the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore where many sessions were held are the primary sites of this world-historical event.
The Cathedral of San Vigilio, a Romanesque-Gothic structure begun in the twelfth century and completed in the sixteenth, anchors the central Piazza del Duomo, which is one of the finest medieval civic squares in northern Italy. The Fontana del Nettuno at the center of the piazza and the frescoed facades of the surrounding palaces — most notably the Case Cazuffi-Rella with their Renaissance frescoes of mythological subjects — create an ensemble of exceptional visual quality. The Castello del Buonconsiglio, the former residence of the prince-bishops who governed Trento for centuries, is a large castle complex whose towers and apartments rise on the eastern edge of the historic center. Its museum contains important medieval and Renaissance art, and the Torre d'Aquila houses a celebrated cycle of Gothic frescoes depicting the months of the year (c. 1400), one of the finest examples of secular medieval painting in Italy.
The MUSE — Museo delle Scienze (Museum of Sciences), designed by the architect Renzo Piano and opened in 2013, is one of Italy's finest natural history museums. Its permanent collection explores the natural history of the Alps, biodiversity, evolution, and the history of life on Earth through an innovative and immersive exhibition design that has made it one of the most visited museums in the region. The museum's location in the former Michelin factory district, now redeveloped as a cultural and residential quarter, represents a successful example of urban regeneration.
Trento is surrounded by some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in Italy. The Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are easily accessible from the city, and the Adamello Brenta Nature Park (Parco Naturale Adamello Brenta) offers exceptional hiking and wildlife in the western Brenta Dolomites. Several ski resorts, including Folgaria and the Paganella area, are within easy reach of the city. The Trentino region is also an important wine-producing area, known particularly for its white wines — Trento DOC, a sparkling wine made by the traditional method, is one of Italy's finest metodo classico sparkling wines — and for its grappa production.
The University of Trento, founded in 1962, has grown into one of Italy's most highly regarded research universities, consistently ranked at the top of national tables for teaching quality and research output. Trento is connected by motorway and rail to Verona, Innsbruck, and the broader European network. The city's combination of historical significance, natural beauty, excellent food and wine, university energy, and exceptional quality of life makes it one of the most desirable cities in Italy to live in and one of the most rewarding to visit.
